Here's what happened inside. It was a pretty loud crack when it hit. I was in bed, about 10:30 or so. I'm sure there's plenty of damage to the new shingles and the roof, so that's the first order. The inside can come along as I see fit.

There goes the IronJohns valve.

There were plenty of trees down all over the place. The local guys are all tired of the chain saw. All the neighbors had them down, but the Derecho pruned a lot of them in advance. The guy working on the tree took care of a lot of it this afternoon, so we can all get out to the state road.

Here's the guys starting on the tree with my neighbor Frank looking on. Only the trunk is left on the house now, they're coming tomorrow to finish and prop it up while cutting it off the roof.

Glad you're alright! That's why you frame roofs with real lumber!!! I often run rafters 16" on center in areas with lots of trees near the home. I once repaired a truss roof that had a tree come down on it during the night, landed on their kids empty bunk beds!!

here in the mountains of north east TN the wind has not been to bad but the snow started Sunday night and calling for it the next 24 hours. they are predicting a foot of the white stuff. I lost the front driveshaft yesterday morning and had to cross the mountain in 1 wheel drive (no limited slip) to get a new U joint. needless to say it was a 10MPH drive on icey roads and was quit treacherous. here are some pictures. the first one is of the truck windshield and the bottom one is of the road coming in to my place.

We have Fox NEWS on and back and forth to CNN as we speak..

At least when we have a cyclone we would NEVER EVER have to consider the odds of blizzards to follow ~

Some extremely dramatic footage ~ and scary ~

Take care all ~

Lucky the tree didnt imbed you in the motorcycle in the basement , Dog T . The root structure looks somewhat skimped .

Old silver dollar tree would come down in Ea storm , grew 20 ft Ea year though . Never got much over 40 ft .
Hope they got all the British Motorcycles above flood level , over there .

Boat & house doing fine thru 70+ knots wind, 6' tide surge above full moon tide. No electricity, running on generator.
lots of major damage here in Southern RI. from wind and ocean.
I live about 1.5 miles from Narragansett & Matunuck Rhode Island that were hit hard and were all over the weather channel & national news.
But New York & New Jersey has it much worse.
I wonder how many less Nortons are going to be around after Sandy came to town?
My Norton, Triumph & Ducati are doing fine!

Anybody heard from Kenny Cummings?

Yes, His apartment right across from Battery Park took on some water. Don't know how much damage.
I believe his shop was high and dry but he will likely be without electricity for some time yet. Jim

All the best with storm damage recovery guys,& just as matter of interest, what is the functional wading depth capacity of a Commando? Are they Lucas[points] limited? Or good to Amal level?

Thanks for the concern, all.

No power at our place since Monday night. Last night we stayed at a friend's place just one block away that has full amenities like warm water, power, and even internet!

Such a weird thing - we were right in the middle of it but with no power, internet, or cell service. We couldn't see news or hear what was happening. Now I'm on the 'net and kinda blown away.

The storm itself was actually very tame. The winds and rain were fairly moderate. After the power went out, I went out onto our street to film a video to send my family. There was hardly any wind at all. But as I looked down my street I saw the water surge coming, and that's when sh*t got real! The water came up the block to within about 100' of my place. My apartment basement flooded through the walls as the water table was so high it was coming through the underground tunnels and seeping through into my basement. Not too bad though - we bailed for a couple of hours and it subsided when the tide went out. But the damage done to my neighborhood (Tribeca) was immense. We generally have to deal with things like bombs, gun fights, terrorism, etc. Never worried about weather stuff like others do. I can't even begin to say what devastation flooding does. It ruins everything. I have much more understanding for those who deal with this in other parts of the country. We are expected to get power within the next couple of days.

Today I'm taking a water taxi across the Hudson to Jersey City where my shop, NYC Norton is located, to assess. I hear there was 4' of water out in the street on Monday night, but the shop itself is on the 3rd floor, so all is safe. My trusty van parked outside may be history though. Power not expected there for another 3-4 days at least.

Things are fine here. Sun is shining, kids are being tolerant of sleeping on floors with no power. Kinda like racing at Nelson Ledges. When the power returns, we'll be 95% back to normal.

Here's a video of the downtown Battery Park/Tribeca area taken by a couple of crazies on their bicycles. My street appears at about 4:27 (Palm restaurant is at the end of my block). I saw that Bentley underwater down the way. Still had the wipers going.

Youse guys in NY/NJ really got the brunt of it. We had some wind/gusts and maybe 8" of rain here which made the ground really soggy, but we have power as of 9pm last night and the roads are clear now. The tree is off the roof and gone now, just a matter of repair. I'm really lucky it didn't smash that end of the house down to the floor. I guess fir 2x12s are pretty strong. I'm still concerned that maybe one of the rafters is cracked, now that they can get on the roof, it's pretty spongy in places even though the shingles are tight. Hopefully it's just the plywood cracked. Inside's not bad.

It's a pretty awesome chestnut oak.

dave good to see the tree is gone.if you have a fire place maybe you can have a little revenge by using it for heat  . you ( or better yet a qualified person) need to have a look in the attic to inspect to find what damage was done to the rafters and roof decking and you also might want to look at the wall and anything that supports it IE framing and bottom plate's for damage as there was a lot of weight that hit that wall.

we did not have the wind you had but our precipitation was in the form of a WET HEAVY snow that was over a foot. I missed a picture of it sliding off a roof here. the roof at one point is 6 feet above ground level in the center of the building BUT the snow was a solid sheet from the roof to the ground.

Duh the planets warm and the planets cool -always has and always will, just no one really knows what's doing what besides man's part in it. The salt will be wrecking havic now and a long time to come. Wax them NYC rigs and get out the wd40 as the road grime will be extra toxic till some regular rain and snow storms.

At one point in time dinosaurs roamed a warm earth, Than we went into an ice age. I would guess that you can figure on your own what happened next, yep it went into a warming phase all without the help of SUV's, fossil fuel burning power plants, CO2 and cow farts. If you follow Al Gore it looks like his was profit motivated as he sure did NOT slow down his use of fossil fuels flying around the globe earning millions and building mega mansions on his scare mission telling us it was ALL OUR FAULT.

DogT, bummer about your roof. The good thing is that roofs are easily fixable, people less so, and I'm glad you and yours were unharmed.

Commiserations from the other side of the pond,

Dave

I'm still a bit concerned that one or more of the rafters may be cracked. We'll have to pull off some plywood to tell, but yes it's completely repairable. I'm just glad it didn't do the big smack down. We'll check the top plate when we get the cathedral ceiling off where the hole is too. The tree work alone is about $6K since they had to take it apart 6" at a time.

Commiserations from Sydney to those affected by Sandy over there. The damage looks devastating on our TVs, but glad not to hear of any tragedy from the forum. Sydney does not get hurricanes (or cyclones as Oz's northern latitudes get), but violent wind storms regularly wreak havoc on Sydney's "leafy" suburbs.
Good luck
Martin
