Hi
I am building my race engine for next year & will be attempting to grind down my steel rod caps & blend them in to the alloy rod.
Now as I contemplated this I thought 40 years old rods, low mileage, never done this before, new lightning rods all alloy 130 quid each why bother?
My friend Rob raced Commandos for years broke cranks broke off the cases under the barrels never broke a rod!
Any views?
all the best Chris

I used genuine norton rods, balanced, polished then shot peened. They have been in there for a decade or so. I never rev it more than 7000 and the motor produces 68bhp at the rear wheel.
Hope that gives you an idea of what standard rods can do.
John

Thanks

Thanks John

Rob is very straight & raced commandos hard for many years. He also stated that his would go to 7,200 if needed in the heat of battle but why chase more revs when they give the best at 6,600. He is sceptical of the revs that some of the other Commando riders claim.
Looks like I will get to the grinding wheel in the next few months.
all the best Chris

rods

drop a line to mick hemmings -- he has built and raced Commando's for years -- not much that mick does not know about building race engines.
Mick has a shop and will be happy to offer personal help.
James.
