Hello all,
My crackshaft oil pump worm gear got chipped up when the nut came loose on the oil pump. It's out on the end and I am hoping due to the fact that they're rather expensive and the nobody responded to my wanted ad that this one will still be fine.
What is your opinion?
Peter

To me it's one of those things that LOOKS like it MIGHT be OK but personally, I wouldn't trust it and I'd reluctantly pony up the bucks for a new one (or a good used one).

In the end, I'm with mike996 on this, much safer to replace with a new or good used part....

At first glance, if the damage is on the releasing side of the gear, I would be tempted to take a small file and dress the sharp edges and use as is. But, I doubt this damage would have occured if it were the releasing side of the gear. Not at all comfortable with using it if it's the engaging side of the gear, which I suspect.

What scares me the most is, you don't know what kind of damage may have been done to the gear in damaging it. It could have easily been compromised. If it were to self destruct, especially at speed, who knows what the collateral damage might be..... I'm thinking ugly. I don't know what they cost, but consider half of the cost is for the gear, and the other half is for peace of mind....

Drop RGM a line they have a great stock of used parts.

Old Britts has a used one listed right now for $15.00 This would be worth a look? I would not use the broken one myself, Also check the other gear real close to make sure it's ok.

Either step up to the counter and buy a new one, or assemble everything and turn the engine over slowly to see if the chipped areas come into contact with the mate. Don't guess. My two cents.

Thank Horton but it's the crankshaft gear not the oil pump gear.

Santa just PM'ed a little while ago and he's going to drop one down my chimney.

Thank you all for your input.

Hmm, the worm drive pulls the crankshaft to the TS and therefore pulls the worm gear towards the case, Should not need the nut to keep on nor much I can see to chip it, especially if trailing edge. Gear likely ok if edges rounded and tests ok installed. BUT I'd SURE BE Concerned it did not some how tug/jerk hard on the oil pump cast iron snout. I'd had a couple of those fracture, so look really close there.
Also check pinion gear shaft still set square and not tweaked. Also possible it jerked on cam shaft too. Might try to check its run out to ride w/o concern.

Hi pvisseriii, I wouldn't chance it on one of my bikes. From what I know about gears, they are a good bit harder on the outside (sort of like case hardened) than the interior of the gear. Once you compromise this harder outer layer it could continue to crack.

Nice paperweight , spend the 15 bucks offer ,check oil pump for possible cracking from the shock , where are the missing 2 pieces as they must be found.
