Replacing Heads on Desert Sleds

So quick solicitation of the opinions of the experienced with the N15/G15-CS style frames:

Do you prefer to pull the cases out of the frame and reassemble an engine on the bench, even if the bottom end doesn't need any work, or to try and fiddle the head into place with the limited clearance available?

I always take the engine out.
Installing a cylinder head on an N15 engine in frame, is something I don't wish to my worst enemy.

Completely off topic: Do you (AgentX) still have a belt clutch in that bike, or was it a different sled you put the belt clutch in?

Way easier doing an old Norton twin head on a bench with the engine in a stand. Almost a pleasant job. But that lump is a heavy one getting it in and out when it has iron barrels and a head on it. Get some touchup paint for the frame. If you decide to do the work with the engine in the frame, it does suck the joy out of that job in many ways.

I would wish it on my worst enemy though. The whippings will continue until moral improves.

I do have the Newby clutch in there...worked great last time the bike was running. It has been in storage for about six years now though. It ceased running right before I went on a long overseas assignment where I wasn't permitted to import it and then I've had it in the garage for almost two years now, only cracked it open to address the engine issues in the past 12 months or so. Engine guy took a couple months to get to boring jugs and cutting valves...

And thanks for the advice. Guess I'll have to work on getting the bottom end out next while I'm waiting on top end parts.
