Upon chasing the non-functional signal lights, I discovered that a couple of the wiring terminals on the switch have broken off.

Is there a source for the switch component without the housing?

Is there a source for the whole unit?

I can't seem to fine either.

It's a 1972 Commando, so I think that makes it Mk 2 switch gear.

(I suspect that this may also be the source of my no-start problem, if one of the broken terminals is for the kill switch)

Ya, a broken kill switch wire will shut you down! If you don't want to keep the original switches it is fairly easy to find a replacement. If you like the originals, then you are gonna have to get clever and repair it, or buy vintage switches from someone else. Unless something has changed since the last time I looked for them. Always a possibility.

When I first got my 750, I discovered someone had soldered the wires back on at the switch but that by doing so they had gotten everything hot enough that the contacts were sunken into the plastic enough to not make contact properly. I don't remember now exactly what I did but I am pretty sure it involved heating the plastic enough to reform how the contacts were held.

Switches come and go on eBay. Sometimes they go for a lot and sometimes not. If your housings look good you could take the guts out of a switch that looks like hell and get it for much less money. Having the stock cover and ends intact always raises the price.

I don't know where you're located but this guy in the Phoenix area seems to have a bunch of Brit parts. Broken link Removed

I'm really puzzled by the fact that these switches aren't available new from Lucas – they do quite a lot of similar stuff (http://www.lucasclassicmotorcycle.com/prod_details.html?sa=LU16), and I'd buy the indicator side to replace mine that's split, and held together with a home-brew plate screwed to the side. Nearly 40 years ago, as a callow youth, I bought a pair of them from Pride & Clarke of Stockwell, they were selling stock like that off very cheap, and I stuck them on a BSA that was old when they were new. To my lasting shame, at a time in my life when I had no thought of needing them in the future, it seems that I must have junked them ... Anyway I can't find them. Now I hang on to every little thing. Maybe we should all email Lucas and ask when they'll be available again ...

D'oh – I just tried to message Lucas via their website, as they don't give an email address, but I repeatedly got the error message 'Unauthorized referer': my guess is they only want such messages from the trade. If anyone's interested, their postal address and phone number are here: http://www.lucasclassicmotorcycle.com/contact.html – I'll be calling them soon ...

I think I'll move to this and the Brembo 13mm front brake master cylinder...

Replacement signal light side switch gear internals?

It will put the signal switch to the correct hand, include the horn and headlight dip switch, and I'll wire the emerg-flasher switch to be the kill switch. That might leave the left side nicely balanced in appearance to the Brembo with built-on reservoir on the other side....

Not so "period" though, I guess.
