Hello Norton heads. New to this forum but I've owned 1 or more Commandos for the last 30 years. Currently working on a 74 850 that's been parked for about 10 years.

The question today is what's the best bet for exhaust pipes and mufflers? I'll be getting rid of the stock pipes with the balance tube (one side's cracked) and getting new ones without the tube. Commando Specialties has a complete setup (pipes and mufflers ) for about $370. Anyone use this setup? There seems to be a lot of options out there. Looking for advice as to what looks and works good and what to stay away from.

Thanks.

I switched to the Commando Specialties pipes and mufflers. Good fit and no more pesky crossover. I have had them on about a year. I am sure they are not the best option out there but they fit my budget. I also switched to the 750 style exhaust nuts.

I just purchased headers/ downpipes from Raber's and am very happy with these. They are MK3 style so the position can be adjusted a bit. They are well made and were only $68 each:

I purchased some Wassel peashooters, but sent them back as the chrome was not good. I now have Peashooters on order from Specialties and am looking forward to getting them next week.

Thanks for the feedback.

Are MK III style the same as my MK II? I know MK II is different from the earlier years but I'm not too familiar with the MK III.

MK3 has conical inserts instead of squash washers. So you get to move the headers how you want them a bit more.. They will work on earlier models too I think.

plus the bend has to be a little different to clear the larger primary case of the MK111, but, as Jerry said you can wiggle them around a bit to fit nicely. I'm no expert, but I have done this a few times

I have headers and silencers from Commando Specialties on my 72. Fit fine and after four years and 8,000+ miles they have held up well.
However I do clean them regularly and don't ride in the winter on salted roads.
