avon replacement

What date codes do you have?

What is the shipping cost for a pair to the US?

If tariffs are done correctly, they will have 10% duty (no metal) making their cost about $240 each plus shipping. If other things are ordered at the same times, they will be about $270 each plus shipping. That's a LOT of out-of-date tires!
Is it true that tires should be replaced regardless of tread remaining after 6 years?

Depends on who you ask. Dunlop said 7, then changed to 5 and that was mounted or not and now, see: https://www.dunlopmotorcycletires.com/about/replace-motorcycle-tires/

Avon doesn't say as far as I can tell but many places on the Internet say five years mounted regardless of wear. That's probably a CYA thing. To me, it makes a big difference how the tires are stored, used, inflated, and so on, mounted or not.

The reason there are no Road Riders in the US right now is that the distributor (Turn 14) will not import tires with an old date code. If I remember right, they reject any older than two years. That's why I asked @Madnorton what date code AN is selling. My Goodyear rep was trying to get the distributor to bring in older tires but they refused.

BTW, best I can tell, when Avon tires are available in the US, the seller actually has none - they are drop shipped from the distributor but with the reseller's info. You could watch the available inventory go down to the same lever at each reseller at the same time when they were available.

I believe this is the case also, and they bill you upfront wirhout knowing true inventory.

FWiW I put a set of K70’s on my G15 and have been pleasantly surprised by them. I wasn’t expecting a lot- but they grip predictably and I’ve beveled the rubber off both footpegs.

I even used the bike at the track for new rider orientation and learned it will indeed do the ton.

I run a 18” rear so have different Avon problems to you nineteeners, but, after decades of using nothing but Avons I’m now done with them, I think the way they have handled the (self inflicted) situation and their attitude to their customer base, is absolutely deplorable.

I will most likely be going with the BT 46s that Matt at cNw uses for my next tires on all my classic bikes.

Well said.

I have BT 46's on the RZ350, H2. Stick like glue, and wear is OK.

Down to the wear bar....
That means I'll have to dispose of it properly....

That is the issue today, Avon is no longer Avon, its now just a Trademark as Lucas is on green boxes. Well it is a bit more that Lucas as the tooling and hopefully the chemical mix has been carried over but not a lot more. But the factory is shut and the original designers and workers on the dole.

😞

Greed.

But, at least according to their brochure they don't make a rear tire for 19" that fits a Commando and the 18" selection is sparse.

It seems that most tires recommended here are the same and some are using front tires on the rear - don't know if that's OK.

I too would like to settle on something else, just haven't figured out what. Avon is so unimportant to Goodyear that I would not be shocked to see at least the vintage tires go away completely even though I'm told they won't. In truth, they are not really vintage tires as they are tubeless.

Just for fun, I did an AI search for 100/90-19 rear tires. Many came up but it said mainly for front. So I said not interested in front, only rear. Then it came up with Kenda K657 and IRC. I asked where to buy them and it listed nowhere for IRC and several for Kenda. I checked each and there were no 19" rear. I told the AI that and it apologized saying old listings listed them but that there are none currently listed.

So, in the "mind" of AI, there simply are no 100/90-19 rear tires available today.

The Dunlop K81/TT100 F/R 4.10-19 at least fit and are available.

I’m sorted for Avon Roadrider 4.00 x 18 rears for next year as I bought a couple a while ago but has anyone tried these from Michelin?

They look worth a punt mate 👍
They look good except that the four Commandos I'm working on have good rear rims and spokes in 19" :(

In fact, there are plenty of choices if you have 18" rear rims.

Annoying that Triumph went to 19" rears for Trident - need tires for my last Trident as well. At least my Triumph twins have 18" rears.

I haven't bought from Partzilla in years. This is why.
That's nasty.

Chaparral used to be good, but known brand name motorcycle tires are going through the roof everywhere. Crazy considering the short wear life span of motorcycle tires compared to auto tires. Yeah, I know it's been that way forever, but still $267.+ for one skinny tire.

I've been buying tires for my pre-Commando off Amazon due to Prime member convenience, but motorcycle tires are generally a bit on the been on the shelf a long time condition if the price is good on Amazon. At least that has been my small sample experience. Others may have gotten brand new production tires from Amazon vendors.

As far as I know, they were produced through late 2023 in the UK, so there may be some left that are less than 24 months old if only barely. I have one spare that is 4423 and the ones mounted on the bike are both 4923.

I checked Heidenau. The US distributor has 3.25 x 19, 3.50 x 19 and 4.00 x 19. Made in Germany.

Also, I have a Michelin front tire on my modern Triumph T100. Works fine, good on rain grooves, however can't speak to sporting performance because I am not a fast rider

Is the Michelin you have a “Road Classic”?
