I removed the retaining plates for the rocker shafts to polish and plate, and the inside plate seems to have the gaskets glued to them. Is there any way I can soak these gaskets off? It is pretty dangerous with a knife and the fingers because they are so small. Also, what sealant should I use to put the gaskets back on?

Another option is a good soak in carb cleaner. Drop them in the bucket and let them soak for an hour or so. Usually works pretty good for me.

Power wire brush. Watch your fingers! I use Permatex Aviation Gasket (non setting) Sealant. The brown goo.

I soaked them in some engine degreaser I had laying around and that softened them up good enough to rub them off. Looks like most anything will work that has some petroleum in it.

Thanks all. I ended up using a wire brush in a Dremel tool. Worked a treat. Resealed with "Yamabond," which I swear by.
