How do I remove the black coating on 850 speedo / tachometer aluminium holders. I’d like to polish them.holders

All the ones I have seen are painted and not anodised - so a good paint stripper is what is needed - the stuff you buy from a DIY store is not very good these days dues to changes in the law regarding what they can put in there.

I just buy neat dichloromethane (also known as DCM or methylene chloride) - that’s the good stuff they took out of paint stripper years ago.
5 litres lasts for years, and you can use it time and time again.

Also bear in mind that the bare aluminium ones can be purchased from Andover:

Be careful. The polished aluminum clock holders are shorter and if you got Smiths then you just need to remove the stud extensions. If they are the "made in France clocks" then these will not work as the bodies on the clocks are longer.

Thanks, any tips appreciated. Yes, I know I can buy new ones, but wanted to use what I have. Has anyone bead blasted them?

Yes.

Pretty cool what an vapour blaster can do in 15 minutes.

Mine were anodized and took a lot of effort to bring up to a lovely shine using 850 grade wet and dry then moving onto finer grades 1500, 2000, then polishing using a bench grinder with mops fitted.
In my opinion they look much better.

Anodising can easily be removed by dipping the part in a caustic soda + water solution.

I use this stuff for two or three minutes.

Just needs a good wash and then a buff with your favorite aluminium polish afterwards.

Many oven cleaners contain the same chemical (although watered down)

To each his own, but my bike has a lot of bling - stainless, chrome, and polished aluminum. I think the black instrument pods add a bit of contrast to that and look perfect as they are. And keeping them polished once installed would be a chore. JMO of course.
