Hi,

I have noticed that the lowest engine crankcase bolts has sheared off and I cannot get clearance to remove the remaining portion of the bolt as it is blocked by the frame rail. This also will be the same problem when I come to install the new bolt. Any suggestions on the best procedure to carry this out? I hope I dont have to remove the other engine bolts to push the engine up to get it in...

Any ideas please?

Hi welcome! Offset bolts are available.

Jk, yeah, you'll need to move it.

Take off front ISO mount you may have to remove exhausts or at least unbolt silencers from Z plate also head steady then engine should pivot on rear ISO mount.
Keep an eye on pipes wires carbs etc. an take good look at the other bolts if one broke the others may be also on way out.

Thanks - however, still not clear on the best way of getting sheared bolt out - not sure I understand Offset bolts either

Use a punch or anything long an thin that will go through hole so you can hammer it out when you have motor in suitable position

Yes, start with headsteady removal ,front isolastics bolt too then prise/lever upwards (just thinking downwards may clear the rail better) with wood force and pull out the broken bolt bits. But you may need to pull the primary to fit 3 new ones as they would all have been stressed. These 3 bolts have to be real tight and checked for that periodically ,not in the manual for sure. Usually the top one goes loose and shuffles about first.

Thanks toppy, I imagine I should renew all three bolts as a precaution?

Yes, I used a thick screwdriver to drift it out then I hit frame rail. I might Just take a chance and replace the bottom (sheared bolt) and keep and eye on things. Now I am wondering what I should torque the bolts up to?
Thanks for the sound advice all, happy new year.

One thing I've learned the hard way - is usually any seeming short cuts on Cdo access and repair misses something else causing it so back in again too soon. The manual listed torque values are ball park guidelines and guess work T-wrench is on scale after adaptors to T-wrench many critical fasteners. Just screw em tight as you feel safe and a bit more if oil weeps then check em about twice per oil change interval till stable then maybe 5000ish mile marks. Could sacrafice and old bolt to see-feel or measure when bolt twisted instead of nut turn and get back to us. Measure stretch too, should be about .0075" but only practical when out on bench.

Steel for strength and you sure need it here. The original shakeproof washers are pure trouble ,don't know if they were used for the 3 through bolts but do know the vibration forces to them can cause real troubles if neglected ,plus shuffling can cause oblong wear to the cradle holes so inspect for that too. Really like the offset bolt idea.

They vibrate and the result is : worn out carbs, shattered tail assemblys, kidney issues and tingling hands, shortened battery lifes, fractured headsteadys, exhaust pipes and mufflers flying off into ditches, sidecovers skidding down highway, oh, I'm just getting warmed up. Makes ya feel alive though. :P

There is a very simple an totally effective way to stop them vibrating.
Don't start the engine!!!

There's no fun in that though is there??

mine's been sitting in garage for two years. It didnt start so I carried on riding my airhead.

 This is the chart I had in mind when I responded, no Inch or Whitworth though, just Metric.

Where can one order some of these offset bolts? I've never seen them at any of our local hardware stores.
