Redundant round things!

The original Cafe Racers, back in the day, were stripped down to the basics with all superfluous components removed.

Looking at my 961 CR, I see that the only redundant parts are clearly the rear foot pegs. The CR has a pretty radical riding position, obviously not suited to pillion carriage - think Ogri and Mitzi! I never have nor will carry a passenger on this bike. Not to mention ruining that sexy rear end with that ugly rear seat!

Has anyone removed the rear pegs and if so, have you covered the rear peg apertures at all, or just left them?

I blanked mine off. I had planned to get a local fabrication shop to make new peg hangers minus the rear footrest bit as I think the footpeg position is too far forward for a CR, but that idea hasn't left the drawing board yet.

That's not a bad rear end either ;)

Thanks guys, all good options.

Have to admit that I would love to convert the dual seat setup to the single, including those single peg A Frames Scott. This would necessitate a new seat also. We are talking serious money to do this, with the dual seat unit just gathering dust. Can’t really justify that. Could just change the frames of course.

Like that solution Ken, which appears to be a bar end insert. Looks good. I will probably follow Mx’s lead though and fit a large washer, socket headed cap screw and a spacer, that mimics the exhaust hanger setup immediately forward of the foot peg mount. Looks balanced.

Do love that single seat unit look though. And the Aluminium tank! And the polished top/bottom yokes. And the polished dash. And.......! Oh bollox, I may need to go back to work!

Hey FE,

Not Euro 4 - Mk1 (Jul) 2015 Cafe Racer.

I understand from previous discussions on this forum that it is possible but methinks rather expensive. Could’nt really justify it, although I’m slowly talking myself into the Ally tank. Boyz and their toyz!

Steve.

In that case it should be a straightforward job... and you’d be a scoundrel not to...!

I hope Norton continue to make the parts for the single seat machines . Once they changed over to all dual seat models the single seat was history I thought . I would like to be wrong about this . Remember Norton didn't even bother to make the SC to OMEX conversion bracket for the single seat model . You had to have a Dual Seat to bolt it up . You see now why I went with SCS ECU , it was a cleaner straightforward installation .

You can’t buy the single seat anymore. All commandos come only with dual seating.
I would just change / modify the A frames and keep the 2 up seat on.

I was told by the factory that they no longer offer single seat parts. But this was the SG norton.

A Scoundral, how dare you Sir! If I was’nt already a scoundral, I would take offence at you calling me one;).

Might make tentative enqueries about the single seat unit with Norton and see what occurs. I’ll keep you guys posted.

Steve.

You‘re only a scoundrel if you don’t do it sir...!

I was quite pissed that a single seat wasn’t an option, or even possible without major work, when I had mine (2018 Euro 4).

Instead, I asked the factory to NOT pinstripe the seat unit, and IMHO it was very nearly as good as a single seat.

I know someone who fitted a single seat recently, pretty sure he got it from Norton, so definitely worth checking with them.

Get what you mean about the pinstripes on the tail unit of the dual seater, as it does’nt flow across the seat cover it does look slightly disjointed. Single seater looks way sexier to my mind. I had given thought to having a mat black decal of an unfurling Union Jack for inside the bounds of the pinstriping, but could’nt get anything that I liked. This was the closest, unfinished mock-up from a local graphics firm. I was also really interested in the carbon single seat unit - not sure where that ended up or whether it was ever available to others.

Yup, that looks ok. Simple washer and bolts setup to blank off the passenger pegs.

Pegs weigh almost a kilo. Over engineered, definitely! I love the way this thing is built like a tank. Once the knock-off’s and known technical faults are resolved these bikes should last for ever!
