Rebuilding Dummy Axle in Brake Drum on '74 Model

I have a question on rebuilding the dummy axle in the brake drum. I did not pull the internals of the brake drum apart, it was already in pieces when I received it.

When the double roller bearing has been pressed into the brake drum after fitting the dummy axle, felt seal and retaining washer should the threaded part of the dummy axle be able to be rotated by hand from the other side of the brake drum? And if not how is this play taken up? Does it need to be shimmed in some way?

Yes, it will have considerable movement available (at that stage).

When the axle is screwed into it, it will be drawn against the bearing (and will then be clear of contact with the area that it is resting on in your pic).

Does it need to be shimmed in some way?

No. Any shimming mentioned in that area is to do with brake plate clearance, and those shim(s) go inside the brake drum area (if any are required at all).

Thanks Lyell,

I thought that might have been the case - that the dummy axle would centralise on the main axle as it was tightened.

Needed to check though as I hate disassembling things once they have been completed (even if incorrectly).

Thanks for your quick and succinct reply to me.

Cheers

Make sure the snap ring is well into the groove. Years ago I came across a drum and the factory snap ring wouldn't fit. Who made the drum is anybody's guess.

When pressing in the bearing be careful .Watch the snap ring landing, it can be damaged .
