Hi

New member here :)

I am re -building a mkIII 1975 commando and am trying to find out how much play if any I should see to the rear wheel from gearbox sprocket when bike is in gear.
I can roll the bike back and forward by about an inch each way when in gear.

Is this normal, if not where do I look

Thanks

Kind regards

An inch at the outside of the wheel is much less than you think at the gearbox. I think being about to move the bike slightly in gear is normal. There are a lot of things between the wheel and the crankshaft.

I walked out and checked mine after reading this. I have about an inch. There is probably almost that much just in the chain.

I replaced everything between the clutch hub and the rear sprocket 3,000 miles ago and I have about an inch of play when I zero out the chain and engage first gear. Given that I'm running a 21 tooth counter and a 42 tooth rear that would be half at the tranny and even less when you get inside the tranny, where the gear dogs have about 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch play...
