Well yes, the correct spanner is necessary.

The method I posted wont work with S wrench unfortunately, only a straight wrench will provide the correct torque

Surely as long as the axis of the nut or bolt is still @ 90º to the torque wrench it will make no difference to the reading? ( in essence the effective lenght L in this picture).

You're correct, the important thing is that the axis are at 90º, I've tried the method with an S wrench and was not able to get enough clearance before it hit the fins, the straight wrench provides enough clearance, and the open end of the spanner is a nice snug fit on a 1/2 drive

i think you’re right with the S bend wrench but not for the dog leg one.

Do you have a 13mm box wrench? If so, give that a try

I like the "practise on the bench to learn what the correct torque feels like" approach. Less accurate, but should be near enough for the girls I go out with....

Acadian I thank you for the enlightenment through the pictures. I've been pondering your method but didn't want to take the head off and find it to be undesirable.... Without knowing I doubt I'd move on it and tread water forevermore filled with carbon & leaking at the tunnel.

I've heard countless tales of grinding down standard wrenches although aren't they also too long to get at the nut when the bike is all together?

The two options I can see are:

Which is only $21

or:

Which is $52 but lets you get to the front nuts too.

I was just going to get the one from Eurotrash but I may just get the Andover one.

Has any actually used the King Dick tool and does it work?
Yep I've got a set of curved rings, Britool, had them years.

I didn't realize you didn't have any spanners that size
I used to go to boot sales years ago and buy spanners
But I'd only buy britool , footprint, king dick AF and whit spanners really good quality for peanuts
I guess people moved over to metric plus blokes generally don't pull the head off their car for a decoke on a Sunday morning
There was always plenty there, plus over the years people have given me old spanners for the same reason
Cheers

I also would go on weekends to yard sales and buy up peoples old tools, I must have stuff made by every manufacturer there is. lol

I've 'had' quite a gob of mixed tools myself, but the two boys were like big magnets.… While you chase one down the other moves on the pile. I could never win. They got the WW first though they've not had an English item ever either. Go figure.

We aren’t exactly tripping over Whitworth tools over here.

I have a set of open ended WW wrenches that I bought some 30 years ago and they sufficed until now.

Looks quality, works fine. Been around for a long while.

Taking some advise from Mike at AMR I replaced the nut with a Triumph base nut. The one with 12 points on it. Works a dream. Used with the curved wrench, that is similar to the eurotrash one, which I got 25+ years ago from the UK.

A $20 King Dick over a $50 EuroTrash (probably far-East source) any day of the week.
King Dick is one of the oldest tool makers in the UK
