I thought all frame loops were the same width but apparently not, my Fastback tail section does not "sit down" over my '72 frame. The '71 (kinda) "HighBack" made some progress today, it's almost motorcycle shaped!

Tryed swapping seats a few times to discover slight differing widths and frustrations. Almost like owning a computer.

Since the tail section is going to a fiberglass guy to be hacked-up (modified) anyway I'm not overly concerned but I thought they were all the same.

No there are different ones an the size of the tubing changed on some to from one inch to twentyfive millimeters. Also the sizes of main an other tubes changed from imperial to metric.
I have read on this website somewhere and also on ATLANTIC GREEN website if I remember correctly.

There is a reference on atlanticgreen.com. Earlier frames had a narrower rear lope while the 850 frames were wider. I'm surprised you are having a problem with the FB tail section fitting a '72 frame though. I had no problem with my '72 when fitting a '68 tail section. Narrow is 6 3/4" inside the frame loop 4" forward of the rear of the loop. Wide is 7 3/8"in the location. I have a bent 850 frame in the garage. It has the wider loop while the '72 frame has the narrower measurement.

I know it sounds wrong, but I'd cut the frame to narrow it up so any tail section would fit on, it's not going to be structural and it won't be seen

That's kinda wrong. Almost as wrong as putting a small hydraulic jack between the 2 rails to spread 'em a tad wider. Almost as wrong to put wratchet strap arond rails and ratchet tight to pull 'em inwards. How about just modify the seat fixing tabs to suit ,much less wrong. :)

But it's not the seat tabs, the last portion of the frame is to wide/different,to allow fast back type tail sections to fit, doesn't make much sense to spend a whole lot of time modifying the fiberglass housing when it's the frame that's wrong/different.On most frames I've seen that area usually could do with some attention any way

Actually there is nothing wrong to align rails that way as long as you use some proper devices and knowledge :!:

It's my humour. Can't you just search for a widowmaker or early frame (should find one really cheap) ,or bring the tailpiece with you to size it to fit before laying down cheapo money then have the tube welded into place for safety ? Yes that would be a big project. :P

And that would be easier than cutting a portion out of the rear frame hoop bending back in at desired position, and welding back together and cleaning up ? and while your at it straighten the rear loop and brace.

'72 frame has the later, better sidestand lug, I will check the dimensions on this frame (it does not appear to be bent) and send it to the frameman for final straightening before paint.

Rather than modifying the steel to fit the fiberglass I suspect that I will end up having the fiberglass modified.
