I have a problem with my 73 850 the rear drive chain (non o ring) rubs slightly on the chain guard I have tried moving the guard and bending slightly but no joy it has already poped the split link and dont want this to happen again. I am about to replace with a new guard from RGM has any one got any ideas as to what else to try

Where abouts is the chain catching? Some after-market shocks force the guard over.
Enusure you are putting the clip the right way round ie closed end forward. ( Sorry if I'm telling Granny how to suck eggs) Untill you can resolve the problem try slipping a small piece soft steel or brass shim behind the clip, cut neatly to size and fold it over each of the clips' legs.

As Cash said, the spring clip needs to be fitted the correct way for the chain rotation, but that may not stop it being unclipped if you were to push the bike backwards.
As you probably have the clip on the outside of the chain, I would suggest that you turn the joining link around so that the clip is then on the inside of the chain, where presumably it's not going to catch on anything? It may be a liitle more difficult to fit, but it should be safer?

I had a similar problem with mine. After playing around with mounting the master link inside out, I finally got decent clearance by fitting a rubber washer (faucet washer) between the chain guard and brake backing plate. Its just a friction fit, but pushes the guard out just enough to clear the chain.
Maybe next chain I'll try going with a riveted link.

Some aftermarket chainguards have too tall of a "clip" for the lower shock bolt. I have a stainless steel one like this. I had to mash it just a bit to get clearance.
Maybe the maker thought he was doing me a favor by allowing a full head bolt to be used on the lower shock mount! :roll:

Well thnks to all for the advice and I think on closer inspection I have all the problems mentioned
The chainguard clip is to tall
The shocks dont quite clear and push the guard against the chain
So looks like a coupple of mods over the weekend
