Rear brake

On my 1973 850, the rear brake squealed when I bought it a few years ago so I replaced the rear pads.

For a while with the new pads there was no drum squeal, but now the squeal is back.
Could it be that I need one more shim between the brake drum assembly and the brake pad assembly (ie to separate them a bit more.)
Or is there something else I should be looking for?

Thanks
Dennis

Only when I apply the rear brake does it squeal.
Yes, I meant to say brake shoes!!
Then I would say they are glazed. Some 120 grit paper on drum surface and the shoe surface should fix it. If you want go further, remove the shoes and see if they conform to the drum - sometimes you need to file the leading and/or trailing edge of the brake material to get them to fully seat in the drum.
