I have just finished assembling the rear brake on my '74 850. It has two holes that are for the purpose of inspecting the brake shoes that originally had rubber plugs in them. I was suprised to discover that Old Brits nor Andover Norton show these holes or the plugs to exist. My '72 does not have these. But my '74 clearly does. Can anybody shed some light on this?

Rear Brake Plate Confusion

Part #06-5766 inspection plug...I had same problem and found part number by calling Baxter Cycle..It is not shown in the 1974 parts book...Most sellers have them available...British Cycle Supply has them for $1.66 each..

Sorry, no light to shed only empathy to share.

I have these holes also and have had not luck plugging them. Some metal plug just won't bite due to the gauge of the steel and plastic ones won't grab before hitting the brake shoe. Same with the rubber as the lip to envelope the hole will hit the shoe and not hold.

Tacking something in place or gluing just does not seem applicable and would rather leave them open than doing something funky like that.

Before I could post this Beach offered up the part number. 06-5766 Thanks Beach, I shall also pursue this.

AN (and likely Old Britts) do know the 065766 grommets exist, but like many other '74 only parts ("inspection hole" brake plate, slotted chain guard, rear wheel assembly, etc. etc. including many specific Mk2A model parts: "A" battery tray, airbox assembly, etc. etc.) are not shown on the '74 exploded diagrams.

065766 BLANKING GROMMET £ 0.24

If you have a 1974 model, then what you need is a copy of the 065988 (Mk2/Mk2A) parts supplement.
