Hi,

I received and just sent back some Brituro peashooters as the quality was not so good for $350.

I have some old seamless peashooters in very good condition except the chrome. I was wondering if anyone has had peashooters re-chromed? I have not checked with my chroming company to see if they will re-chrome them, but am thinking that I might take this approach. Something tells me it might not be a good idea to re-chrome them. Thoughts?

Cheers- Jerry

I would say that if they are solid and you like them then a re-chroming will more than likey be superior to the original chrome and you will feel really good about them running down the road.

Many plating companys are reluctant to chrome mufflers, as they fear contamination of the plating bath.
Also, the old chrome has to be removed electrolyticaly to get the desired result.
New peashooters from a reputable source will certainly work out cheaper.

I believe that Peter is right about plating companies reluctancy to re-chrome used pipes. Not to mention the cost. My front fender was nickel plated by Browns and looks great, but cost $250+!

Fwiw, I got a set of pipes from Cdo Specialties that were decent, except the left side header was improperly bent. They sent me a new one out at no charge and it looks good. Header angle is sharper or less of a radius than the old style though. I can't remember the exact cost but it was about what you paid for the ones you just returned.

Good luck

really beautiful black Norton, snorton

yes, I do see the sharper header bend but it does not detract at all from the look

nice bike

Yes the bike looks really good SNORTON. More pics?

I suppose I will take my exhausts to the chromers and see what they think and will charge me. These guys at OC plating are really good and used to chroming for bikes.

Have a good Holiday weekend all:)

I had my mufflers rechromed; I think that they are the original ones; they are seamed. Subsequently one has developed a small hole, which I found after the bike began backfiring. I have fixed this for the moment with a plastic weld type product. The mufflers were probably on their way out anyway, but I suspect that the chroming process and the electrolysis in it advanced it slightly.

My chromer, which was an old firm since closed down, was not phased by chroming old pipes; it had expanding plugs designed for the purpose that enabled them to seal the interior of the pipes so that they would not contaminate the chrome bath solution.

If i had the choice again I think that I would spend the same money investing in good quality new mufflers rather than attempting to make aging mufflers look pretty; the chroming is a relatively expensive spend on a product that of dubious quality - but maybe your mufflers warrant that investment.

Might also factor in how long the old baffle tube will remain stable after new chrome. Would make a great decoration if baffle didn't last a good while longer.

Thanks for the good comments. Most of the credit goes to Matt and the boys at CNW. I'll post some pics once I wrap up the wiring and get it all together. Look for the '20/20 hindsight build thread' or something like that.

Cheers
