A new season and a new bike.
The first race with the BHR at Mallory park was this weekend and it was the first time out with the ES2.
I had only done a few laps on it at a practice day a couple of weeks before and it was a bit of a pig that day. The engine had decided that the oil was better off on me rather than inside, and in the second session it started to miss fire which brought me in early to change the plug, I went back out for half a lap when it stopped for good.
The bike felt ok though and I had time to sort things for this weekend. The oil leaks were stopped with a quick rebuild and removing some extra breathers that had been fitted by the engines previous owners, these were stopping the one way breather from working. The cause of the engine stopping was a coil on the BTH mag.
It may seem a bit odd to chose to run a pushrod cooking motor in races that are full of Manx's and G50 etc but there have been a couple of presidents set for many years in Australia and New Zealand by Geoff Clatworthy and Peter Lodge and this caused my interest. There are other interesting bikes out there that also bother the Manx's and these are supported by some very clever people that are prepared to offer advice.
At the test day, I struggled to get through the noise test, it failed at 108db with just the silencer, then at 106db with a Super Trapp end with a 50mm hole but passed with a 40mm hole, they didn't tell me the SPL though.
One of the things I altered after the test day was the exhaust, I extended the pipe to allow the silencer to fit behind the shock and therefor could be tucked in a bit more as it was burning my leg. This meant that the silencer was beyond the back wheel which isn't allowed, so I dismantled the silencer to shorten it, this is when I found that there was only a third of the needed wadding in it. So, shortened by 35mm but fully packed with the new wadding and the noise test was passed at 102db, we are allowed 105db so the job was a gudun.
Mallory is a short track and I was expecting to get lapped by the faster guys like Andy Molnar and Stefan Radakovic who get round in around 57 seconds, I was quite surprised to not be lapped and with my times around 1:04 I finished in 7 place overall, 6th in class, I think I like this bike.
The second race was run in the morning on Sunday as they ran out of time on Saturday. I had taken the Supper Trapp end off and had it retested for noise and it still tested at 102 so the next race was on an open silencer.
9th overall and 8th in class was the result and the lap time had dropped to around 1:02. The bike is good fun to ride and I was not far off what I was doing on the 920 Seeley, how does that work?
I felt I was not making the best use of the torque by being a tad under geared so I went down a tooth on the rear (my smallest sprocket) and was looking forwards to the next race.
This was not to happen when the dark side of this sport reared is ugly head and the meeting was abandoned when Stefan Manoli, a novice scooter rider in only his second race, was killed in a racing incident at the lake esses (Cooper esses). RIP.
