I believe they also come in 35mm and 37mm, Russ at the dyno did say I could probably get away with 37s but the cost is prohibitive at my level, the money would be better spent on some track tuition.
Are the bigger ones bigger bodies?

Not sure, it looks like the float bowls are the same part numbers though.

Track tuition......, I wonder if enough of us to make a small group day out? I would be interested, as long as not Knock Hill.

Yes the body size gets bigger at 35mm - Its a problem with high quality carbs - they are all so big. And its already a tight fit.
So big that they won’t fit the port centres and be able to be mounted in parallel ?

I haven't tried them on a Commando because the 33s are tight as it is. I don't think they are wider but they are taller and thats a problem. You can fit them into a Seeley frame as long as you have the tank cutouts as in photo.

I have 39mm’s on my Mk3 750. Maybe too big, but someone said worth 2 seconds a lap . Anyway they actually do not extend above the frame top rails. Keihin smoothbores probably the pinnacle of carb technology, though happy to concede some of the more esoteric stuff might be better.

Interesting Steve, are you running FCR or CR?

They are the latter, I think FCR's would not be allowed in CRMC?
I think you’re right. I had 33mm CRs on a 988cc triple, very nice instruments IMHO. But not being worried about CRMC / BHR regs anymore, I do rather like the FCRs on the Commando !

Anglesey has been and gone and a very painful weekend it has been.

We took the opportunity to go a couple of days early to get us closer to the track to miss the Friday traffic and to let Georgina have a couple of days doing stuff that interests her. It all was going well with good weather and an amusing caravan park that had chickens running around, three of the littles buggers wanted to leave with us, one got in the caravan, one in the wet locker and was on the spare wheel and one got in the van and was hiding under the bike, if they had stopped clucking for half an hour they would have been lunch the following day.

But it was the packing away of the awning that started the pain, well, not exactly the start, that was putting the angle grinder through my right hand between my thumb and fore finger on Tuesday. When I bent down to pick the awning up to throw it in the caravan, my back went pop. After about 5 minutes I was able to stand and let go of the van but it wasn't good.

I am falling apart and it is a race weekend. After Pembrey, I have had a left knee, not had one before, just getting on and off a bike is painful, it seems to be the twisting of the knee as I throw the other leg over that causes the most pain and a bit of a click, I cannot lift myself with it bent either which makes it awkward to move around on the bike, but now I have a back as well and I am not happy.

Anyway, I have been reading a Mikuni setup guide recommended by SteveA and made a lot of changes to the carbs just before we set off, I changed the mains to 260s, the needles to 6DP17s, the needle jets to 159 P5s and the air jet to 0.7.

Probably not the best idea just before the meet and no way of testing it but the guide does read very well and made sense so I gave it a go. The needle jet were not the ones recommended because I couldn't get them in time, the recommended ones would have been 159 P6 to 8 and I could only source P5s. This turned out to be too small. I couldn't get the bike to run without the choke when cold in the morning, so I lifted the needles one notch and it ran, I then went out for the practice.

That was interesting, first, I had a knee brace on and couldn't get my foot on the left peg so I had to get back out of my leathers to take that off, remember the back? I did, it was going to be a hot day but once those leather were back on they were staying on, the pain was very sharp when I tried to move, so riding the bike was a very stiff affair. I am not a fan of taking drugs for pain but because of the knee, I had been taking a couple of Ibuprofen three times a day and I guess that was probably helping the back too but I wasn't happy on the bike. I got through the practice though and I had no power under 4000rpm.

I put the old 159 Q2 needle jets back in and put the clip back to the middle on the needles and waited for the first race.

As it happens the race was a bit of a result, the main man hadn't bothered to turn up so my second in class wrapped up the championship. My mate beat me on his MZ supermono for the first time which made him happy although he did point out there wasn't much joy in beating a cripple but like I pointed out, there isn't much joy in beating someone who doesn't turn up either but I will take the cup.:)

Due to time and noise constraints, we only got the one race on Saturday so I was out of my leathers and in the shower before dinner, which suited me just fine.

Sunday race 1 and I felt a little less stiff, not much but enough to beat my mate which I found most amusing until I struggled to get off the bike. I think I was 3 seconds a lap faster than the previous day so something was different.

There was another plus, not for the guy that won the class in the first race though, he was miles ahead on his 960 Rob North until the last lap when he found out the grass is less grippy than the track, his dismount resulted in a fire which put him out of the next race too, this means I got the last signature needed for my National licence.

The last race was uneventful and I used it to try and learn the track a bit better, I was a couple of seconds a lap slower but I was trying to be accurate on the ins and outs of the corners and it felt a lot slower than 2 seconds, there might be something in learning the tracks :)

Cadwell with the BHR at the end of the month and then onto the final round with the CRMC at Croft, another track I haven't been to.

Oh yes, the carbs, the bike ran fine after the old needle jets went back in and I have just looked at the plugs and they are a nice caramel colour, I will leave well alone for the next race.

tht sounds like a _very_ painful weekend Ralph. Glad to hear that at least you have some tinware to show for the agony :)

Keep taking the anti inflammatorys. I find you need 3 weeks for them to settle things down. Hope things go well at Cadwell. I am thinking about Croft but not hard.

It still is painful Steve, Georgina is fond of saying I am not right in the head, sometimes hard to argue :)

Like i said I am not a fan of drugs and one of the reasons is, I feel more damage can be done because it is possible to do too much, made possible by the drugs.

Because of the afore mentioned knee, I have been taking Ibuprofen, starting three days before a meeting and I think this may have masked how bad the back was, I am proper slow to get out of the chair just now, it will be ok in a few days but I think I have defiantly done myself no favours by riding the bike. Getting old sucks.

Hi Ralph, sorry to hear of your back problems but good news about the championship; I myself have been suffering with a back problem for the past few seasons, it manifests itself as an itch, when I scratch it my fingers are covered in a yellow substance, the more yellow it is the slower my lap times!:p:p:p:p
