As far as I can tell, it would appear that it would do the job, but I have been told that the Mk3 case was beefed up around the bearing area (thicker casting).
Not that it would be any problem to you, but to use a pre-Mk3 case on a Mk3 I think you will have to machine down the case quadrant boss (and bush, or use the Mk3 bush) as the Mk3 quadrant spindle is shorter and also retained by a circlip (and not a bolt and washer as pre Mk3 type) in order to clear the Mk3 gearchange cross-shaft. There would of course also be no provision to fit the Mk3 neutral switch.
