when I got my 74 Mk2, it had four (4) long stem turn signals, front and rear. i'm seeing some references for short stems on the front. curious as to what was factory original. thanks.

All 4 on The Titanic are the same length, which I assume is the longer version. 3 came on the bike and another out of my bone pile. I think some Triumphs came with shorter stems, so Lucas made boh.

Mine also had those long abortions years ago. I kept knocking them off so I gave up and stuck something less expensive on it...Have yet to have another fatality since the change to cheap.

My '74, manufactured Sept 1973, has the short ones up front and long ones at the rear. My late Bonneville is the opposite.

Go to Old Britts. They sell the short ones (stock) that go on the rear and a short one for the front that has longer threads to go into headlight bucket. Repo stuff but looks good and you get rid of those long ones in front. Looks much better IMO.

My Dec 73 , 1974 Mk2a has (all equal length) long stems front and rear and have no reason to think they are not original to the bike, maybe it was lucky dip on the day.

According to the 850 parts manual (065034) they are the same length front and rear and that is long stem. That's the way my unrestored 1974 MK2A is and I think how it came from the factory.

There would be some logic to short in front and long in rear since that would space them about the same from the centerline. The main thing is that you must have long threads for the front.

thanks for the replies - marshg246 has a good point - "According to the 850 parts manual (065034) they are the same length front and rear and that is long stem." not 100% sure, but my four (4) long stems appear to original to the bike. the rear mounting looks like it has never been disturbed, but i'm fairly sure the front head light bucket has been apart at some point in the bike's life, I also suspect they are originals. one thing I can note, is Andover Norton list individual long and short stems with extended threads. I like the idea of the short stem aesthetics, so I may spring for a set down the road and swap out the parts. again, thanks for the replies - ;)

Note that if ordering stems only, they are the 'late' (850 Mk3 and later replacement) stems/assemblies with stepped outer threaded section with two flats (that prevents the housing rotating).
I don't think the lamp housings are interchangeable between 'early' and 'late' stems and the fittings are different as the late/replacement type has a retaining washer (also with flats) instead of a nut on the outside of the housing and different internal nut.

noted - thanks for the heads up....

My 850 parts book that I've had since 1976 shows only one stalk, as does the AN web page. That said, the blinker stalks on my 74 MKII are an inch longer in the rear. Go figure.
