I bought some quad rings to replace the leaking o ring on the kickstart shaft.
I found a recommendation on Access Norton for the 4213 quad ring.
When I went to install the quad ring, I discovered the OD is way undersize: basically it flops around in the bore until you cram the kickstart shaft in it. I guess this is why the recommendation to glue the quad ring in place with silicone gasket sealer.

A 4213 quad ring is .937 ID, 1.187 OD, and .139 in width.
As I understand it, the stock o ring is 1.0 ID, 1.25 OD, and .125 in width. Correct?

Anybody know a quad ring number that is a better fit/substitute for the stock o ring?

(yeah, I know there are oil seal alternatives, but prefer to leave that for a different thread).

I have used the SKF 9815 seal. Available in stock at NAPA.
The seal OD is appox. 1.26"
The steel metal bushing that is removed to install the seal OD is 1.32"
Heat the gearbox outer cover and the bushing should drop right out.

Thanks Bob,

This is a metal bodied oil seal, which requires the removal of the steel bush. No big deal, but not the approach I want to take. The steel bush is already a loose fit, which means I need to loctite it in place. Which means next time I go in there, I will need to heat the snot out of the case and beat it out. Not my preferred option.

I am looking for the correct size quad ring so it can be installed and replaced without removal of the steel bush.

-213 ???
not for me

It's dash 214
90025K347 at McMaster Carr bag of 25 is $5.83
I wanted to try one after my original o-ring only lasted from 1988 until 2002

My problem is I believe what you guys tell me.....
Such as: " If you want the size for the Kickstart lever I can give that too. Q-4213. BTW Andover norton has their gasket kits with these quad rings. At least the last time I ordered when I needed to replenish my spare parts bin."

In hindsight, what I need is a 4214, confirmed with the table in LAB's link.
Thanks.

I see that Andover Norton also now offer X-rings standard in their gearbox kits and separate parts listings too. Not sure when this happened, but good to see that they are taking on board sensible improvements generated by Norton enthusiasts into their product line.

04.0005
SEAL - KICKSTART SHAFT ( X RING TYPE)

04.0006
SEAL - GEARCHANGE SHAFT ( X RING TYPE)

These are an easy option if in the UK or in conjunction with other parts orders. Good to know the part numbers to use when only needing these at short notice from the local engineering suppliers on a little island paradise far removed from the rest of the world:)

Stephen,
I am sorry that I gave you the wrong size, It should be 4214. I will attach the correction to older post so no one else goes astray.

The dash number(size) does not change for either round or quad X. Though the actual part number may.
This is the list kept in my parts box.

See Dyno Daves list above.

Also check the list below. I found that many of the stock size oring start to leaks before long. Go viton orings (available in harder durometers) and oversizes that fit tighter against the shaft and last much longer against leaks.

(available at online Oring store)
Tranny kick shaft – use oil & wooden shaft & patience to force in a oversize 1/8x1-1/8 ID viton Oring. (I gave up on the Xring after this worked better).
Oversize 3/32 x 11/16 ID viton O ring shift lever – force into place with oil & wooden shaft - requires patience.
Tranny cam & shift pawl – force in 3/4 OD x 3/32 viton Orings

1/16th by 3/8th OD hard viton Oring clutch push rod seal (after market oring nut item for belt drives) (not oversize)

Tranny main shaft clip at sprocket ¾ ID by 1/8 “ & add 2nd 1/16 thick 1-1/6 OD oring over the top against sleeve gear.
