I have a '73 850 and a rolling motorcycle floor jack and I want to lift the bike for some maintenance. Not wanting to put undue strain to any isolastic components or cradle, I am unsure where to safely place the jack's bike support rails before lifting.
Any advice would be appreciated.

It is best done like this, some carving is needed to clear the kick and center stand lugs. This will allow you to remove wheels without tipping right over although you still have to use your head. The wood can be found pre-made, it's for banding pallets. A 2 1/2 wide by 1 1/2 thick board with a 1 inch wide groove about 3/4 deep.

That's pretty much what I have too, except that I cut the support boards myself. The extra 3/4 inch of wood under the frame insures that the head pipes clear the lift and also protect the frame from scratches.
