Hi Guys,

Anyone know where I can find a copy of a PR parts catalogue from 1971? I'm hoping to find something that clearly states 1971, showing the front disc brake.

Thanks

I previously posted the production racer catalog, Technical Release N3/12, in .pdf format on the INOA site, but with much better picture resolution than the one link above. You can view it at

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/INO ... ON%20KITS/

Unfortunately, it has no date on it, so it probably won't suit your purpose, but you will get a much clearer picture of the front disc brake bits.

Thanks Guys,

Unfortunately, Tech Release N3/12 specifically says 1972. I've seen some 1971 French 'Wild Bunch' brochures with the PR, anyone know of English versions that indicate 1971 in print.

Sorry, CD. My copy of the Wild Bunch brochure doesn't have any dates on it. The closest I can come is a January 1971 article in Cycle magazine on the PR. It has a review and road test, with pictures of the PR with the Norvil front disc brake. Would that be of any help?

Hi Ken,

Ya, that might help! Also, if you've got an English copy of the Wild Bunch brochure, that might be good too, as it shows the rest of the models with drums. I may need to prove that a disc option was available from Norton in 1971.

Thanks!

Hi Don,

I have two scans of the Wild Bunch brochure, one in .jpg format that I scanned at high res from my copy, and one in .pdf that I downloaded from ClassicBikes.biz. I can't seem to find the ClassiBikes.biz site to give you a link, but if you'll PM me with your email, I'll send them both to you. I'll also scan the Cycle article and send it.

I'm assuming from your posts that you are looking for info to convince one of the racing organizations that the 1971 year model PR was a production vehicle with the front disc brake in order to qualify it for some sort of vintage class. Is that correct? If so, several of the books on Norton (Bacon, Holliday, Woollett) specifically mention that the bike was catalogued with the front disc brake in the 1971 model year for competition in the FIM 750 Production class. Would any of those documents help?

What are you up to Dad, er, Don.

For those who don't know,
We should now refer to Don as,.....
Cowboy DADDY.

Slightly worried that the front master cylinder is the same for single and twin disc set-ups

I had one on a Rickman Trident (since relocated to France and featured in the above website) with a single disc - just like squeezing a brick.

Interesting. I hadn't noticed that before in the catalog. When I converted my PR to twin discs back in the '70s I kept the original 9/16" bore Lockheed master cylinder for a while because I liked the "two finger" brake feel. After a crash at Willow Springs when I grabbed way too much front brake in a panic stop and lost the front, I switched to the 5/8" master cylinder that Lockheed specificied for use with their dual disc setup.

I have an Italian-language version of 'The Wild Bunch' brochure which shows, as you say, only the PR with a disc and, printed on the back, a 'Stop Press 23 DEC 1970" legend regarding the third year of the MCN Machine of the Year award.
It doesn't necessarily follow that the production '71 PR was actually fitted with a disc though. Brochures should, in my opinion, be treated as a manufacturer's aspiration rather than a statement of fact.
