Private mail contact confusion?

How does one use new forum format to contact others from various threads w/o appearing in public post area?

Click on the user name under the avatar and then in the pop up click "Start a conversation"

Hi Steve,

Its now called "conversations". If you go to your profile (hover over name) you will see a menu if you hover your mouse there. Select "Conversations" and start a new one or reply. You can now easily add multiple recipients.
