Hi, can anyone tell me do you have to load the kickstart before you adjust primary chain on mk2a and also what oil should i be running in there Brian

Theres no reason to load the kickstarter. Ideally you should remove the spark plugs to allow easy rotation of the primary chain, as you should check the flex in the middle of the top run to see if there are any tight spots. If none, then the adjustment is as per the manual. I prefer a slightly looser flex, the overall up and down play I use is around 8mm each way. Auto Trans Fluid is very popular in the primary, no more the 200Mls. Note too that the level bung is a bit higher than that (well at least on my 850Mk2 it is). Retorque the gearbox bolts to ensure the box doesn't shift out of alignment once youy are happy with the primary chain tension. Then check the drive chain to the rear wheel, it will be a bit slacker if you have moved the gearbox back to set the primary.

IMPORTANT: First tighten the rear adjuster, til the primary chain is tight as a bowstring. Then adjust to spec by tightening the front adjuster.

If you don't do it this way, the drive chain will pull the slack out of the adjusters in a way that loosens the drive chain and tightens the primary -- in very short order.

Good luck. Not a hard job, and definitely a worthwhile one.

The over tightening of the primary then slacking off also serves to center the floating fiber seal where the mainshaft from the trans enters the primary case.
