$1400 in 1970 equals $8235 in 2012 dollars, your currency has lost over 83% of it's value and purchasing power since then. Do you know why?

There is no mystery in inflation. The old Econ 101 definition is as valid now as it ever was. Inflation is too many dollars chasing too few goods. It happens when currency is not backed by anything substantial and the government prints money to cover its debts. It pays "bad money" to pay loans made in less "bad money." It is a form of hidden tax and a particularly cruel & destructive one in that it ruins our savings and encouraged bad habits on the part of consumers who know that whatever it is, it will only cost more tomorrow. Who is to blame? Look in the mirror. We keep electing the folks who promise something for nothing and inflation is one of the results.

Vintage Paul, off to buy Norton parts before they ratchet up again . . .

Not trying to be political....I hinted at it on my first post to this thread but you hit it right on the head.

It's probably got more to do with the money managers than the politicians. Money managers are smart, politicians are ignorant. The money managers have the politicians in their pocket, so to speak, so yes the politicians cause it via the voters, but the money managers are sucking the middle class and lower dry for the benefit of the banks/Wall Street and produce nothing for any country.

Sorry to be political, but I just had to say something. I won't do it again.

The Velo looks like the best investment !

In 1969 I was living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I bought a new Trident. At the time the USD was worth quite a bit more than CAD. IIRC, I paid less than $1400 USD. Of course, there are times I think I may have dated Raquel Welch, too.

Sad thing about that after 2 years of ownerships I sold it to my cousin for $900 and threw in my Bates Motorcycle leather jacket. I tried to trace the Norton 10 years ago in hopes to locate it but never did. :(
