I see in the book and slide hammer used to remove this thing. Does it all come out togather or must the advance mech stuff be removed. Is the points cam shaft pressed into the valves cam? My pictures aren't too good.

The auto advance should extract as one unit. It has a taper that fits into the end of the camshaft, so remove the points plate and auto advance retaining bolt, then screw the slide hammer into the thread inside the auto advance spindle, and use the slide hammer to extract it.

Then throw it away and put some electronic crap in there.

Ok thanks. Sounds like I'm doing it right. Sure is tight. I plan to go electronic but for now I just need to get everything apart.

Just remove the long fixing bolt, insert a short bolt of the larger thread that's on the points cam shaft, and tap it from side to side with a large screwdriver handle; it'll pop right off.

Thanks guys. Got it out and cover is off. Now it looks like I need a pinion (?) gear puller for the gear on the crank. Timing marks galore. punch marks, paint marks looks like more hicks than me has been in this thing. Any tricks for the gear Grandpaul? Isn't this the one thats heated up before installing?

Never needed heat to remove or replace the crank gear. A standard puller may be needed to remove the camshaft sprocket and a crank pinion puller to remove the pinion gear from the crank. This is a three jaw device that grabs the triangular washer behind the pinion gear.

The puller is available from most Norton parts dealers or you might borrow one as it's only needed to remove the pinion gear.

I think I will make one. I'm already back on the "overtime list". I need that 80 bucks for rod bearings and possibly V guides not to mention pipes. Those new isolastics put me in the hole on the play money:roll: I don't know a soul around here that has a Norton. 3 Harley shops. Maybe they have a rental
