Can help me identify this bracket please:

Plastic Airbox

Air box:

Plastic Airbox

Is the ignition switch/side panel bracket fitted correctly on the air box, if so what is the fixing below the bracket for. Just aquired the airbox and do not have a parts book for this variation.

Regards,

JS

That bracket doesn't go to the airbox. It goes behind the battery where the rectifier / capacitor hook up

Just to clarify - this is an 1974 Mk1A - an ex UK police machine and was fitted from new with the plastic airbox and black cap silencers. My brother in law was the first registered owner of the bike once the police had finished with it - clapped out in 1978. Unfortunately I butchered the original airbox 30 years ago and have managed to aquire the one shown recently on Ebay for £10

The airbox is unmolested and is fitted with threaded inserts at the top and R/H side (only two here as oposed to the three as shown on the MK 3 parts list).

Do you mean two threaded inserts on the left hand side of the box (the two bolts)? In which case I'm wrong about the rear one being a blanking bolt, as that isn't the same as the MkIII airbox with the riveted-on side panel bracket and no switch bracket.

Here's a couple of photos of my 'in progress' '74 Mk IIA

I'd say you've got the right airbox, which definitely is different from the Mk III.

Unfortunately there's no illustrated parts list for the noise control models. just a supplement which I didn't bother with.
The breathing arrangement isn't per the Mk III (no tower thingy - just a pipe from the oil tank into the top right rear corner of the airbox), but mine is still in progress, so I can't really show this at the moment :(

Note the 'patina'd' original rear shocks, they're just holding things together for now, honest!....the Ikons arrive tomorrow :)

Ah, that makes more sense! As of course the plastic airboxes sit 'nose-down' in the frame!

The 065988 MkII/IIA parts list is, as you say, a non-illustrated supplement intended to be used in conjunction with the MkI parts book, however there was an illustrated MkIA supplement, apparently.

Hi, First bracket fits at rear of battery box as seen in included photo, bracket for side panel is also attached to it.

The MkIA/IIA battery cover side panels should have a DZUS fastener attachment to the battery tray at the lower rear of the panel.

My MkIIA doesn't have this bracket- not conclusive evidence, I know...
I'd assumed it was a MkIII only, but I'll welcome any correction ;)

That's right as far as I know, as both the MkIII Roadster/Hi-Rider and Interstate L/H panels have a lug with a rubber insert at the bottom which fits behind the Z plate, they do not have the DZUS fastener on the battery tray, only the one that fits to the square hole in the MkIII airbox bracket.

Ahhh! So the MkI/II A are the only ones to have the Dzus fastener on the bottom of the panel.
Learned something already this week ;)

Me too, as don't think I've ever seen one of those 'A' model airbox brackets before now!

By some strange coincidence, I've just obtained a copy of the illustrated Mk1A parts supplement this very day!

The 1A supplement shows a 065368 'rubber seal washer' between each bracket mounting hole and the airbox, also two 'packing, airbox' pieces, one 065371 item behind the bracket at the front end, and another 064220 item behind the vertical leg.
The rectifier bracket 064063 also appears to be a different type.

Anyone who wants a copy of this document please contact me by PM or forum e-mail (with your own e-mail address included) and I will send them a jpeg copy.

Sorry guys, It was the big, bracket, plate thing I was meaning more than anything in my location description, sorry for any confusion!
Picture should be clear enough for its location.
Cheers

Many thanks for the responses - it would seem that I have managed to aquire the correct Mk1A box without realising that there was a difference between that and the Mk3. Does anyone do an airfilter for the same beast?? - end of questions for now - cheers.

The '74 JPN also uses the same setup..Mk2A airbox. I had to find one of these plastic boxes and remember that metal bracket for the ignition switch. The Dzus fastener is plastic and pretty flimsy.

My mistake - yes L/H side.......................

The photographs confirm it - the plastic airbox is the ugliest thing ever to be fitted to a motorcycle.
