I need a your assessment.
I mounted the cylinder as shown in the following picture.
I used +0.40 new Hepolite pistons and rings.
Okay, no problem, but:
-with base gasket mounted (standard) the Pistons exceed about 1 mm on top (not planed) of the cylinders!, is this normal?.
The cylinder is a standard commando from a 14.... engine.
I'm not going to remove the cylinder: What i must to do? I could mount a higher head gasket, I have a 3 aluminium mmm, those that are used to reduce the compression of Combat.
But, with this aluminum gasket, Pistons remain below the top of 1.8 mm.
The head is not planed too.
I await your suggestions, please, easily translatable words.
Thanks
Piero

p.s.: Is it true that the Hepolite rings are not very good?

My Combat's oid and then new pistons stick em up .050" above cylinder surface w/o a base gasket installed and both run a bit better that way. Looks normal to me so just stick on head gasket put on head then turn though to make sure push rods seating then carry on till starting. A crooked piece of soft solder can be put in around piston rim to make sure there enough clearance at hi rpm.

Why do you think that? Do you mean genuine Hepolite or modern (made in Taiwan) Wassell Hepolite?

Dear Les,
i think are genuine Hepolite, the box is those in the pictures below.
Can i use the standard head gasket or is bettere use a fat gasket?
My be i listened about taywan bad rings.

Items in the yellow and black box will be recently manufactured Wassell Hepolite (Hastings rings?) even though the boxes look "shop-soiled". The yellow/white/blue box will be genuine original Hepolite.

Probably, have you checked there is sufficient clearance between pistons and combustion chambers with the standard thickness gasket?

Dear Les,
i mean they are wassel taiwan hepolite!!! and i dont know if thy are Hasting ring (arent good?).
Do you think are good the same or is better to change with genuine hepolite? or GPM? or ???
Regards.
Thanks.

I will have to leave that for others to answer, as I've never used Wassell Hepolite/Hastings/GPM rings, but here is a previous discussion about pistons and rings.

You'd also want to check that there is enough clearance between the valves and valve clearance cut-outs.
If a valve touches a piston, goodnight.....

Seems to me my pistons left a carbon ring at the top of the cylinder walls of about 1/16". Just to throw some crap in the conversation. But I'm no expert here. I used the standard paper gasket for the cylinder base and the flame ring head gasket.

You can have that much with the crowns proud of the deck, due to the fact that the top ring is still below the deck.

Remember that the head has combustion chamber relief; as has been stated, the important thing to check is piston-to-valve clearance with adequate compensation for expansion with full heat soak.
