Amals designed to have 1.5 air screw turns out for best idle, though pilot can compensate about perfect idle off of ideal. Cdo are not level nor still as a bench or even hand holding. Visual fuel level is nice to see but not directly related to what the rest of the circuits were designed to feed from. Trixie's are off ideal, under 1 turn out after mystery flooding issues after replacing rings, had to bump floats down in a rush to get a ride in that day, but runs so good top to bottom ani't bothered to fiddle to real Nortoneer level. So what is the range of yours and what does it imply to you? Trixie's are .7 and .9 turn out this summer.

<1 turn means rich, on a 2T it is insurance against having a lean seizure on hot/racing hi-rev, shut throttle downshifts, does it reduce the likelihood of wheel-hop/engine braking on a Commmando?

As soon as you turn your grubby paw away from idle the pilot jet is doing nothing!

Racers technique, set on bench 1.5 turns out.....leave well alone....road riders technique...start at 1.5 turns out and fiddle for hours and imagine you made a difference!

You will be better of spending time making sure that the slides actually move absolutely together, stops out, and that you put both needles in the same slots! then set tickover as required with the stops...

To further confuse...

Check to see if the pilot air screws match.
If a bike has been put together from a bunch of donor sources it's easy to get slightly mismatched sets.

Check this sampling of genuine Amal pilot air screws. Note the difference in taper heights. Maybe could make a difference in the number
of turns to get a strong idle air/fuel mixture.

Bobbie-z, you just threw in the monkey wrench rattle I'd forgotten about. I've run into that difference too, but stupid me thought I just gotten a pilot screw set from wrong model of Amal. So I need to measure the couple of sets I have and Wes's to make sense of the 1.5 turn out with float level diddle, and so do the other reporters, if they care to. Thanx for awareness of reason for an expected adj. range.

1 1/2 turns out is a starting point, not an absolute or else it would be blanked off like the Mark II's. No two Nortons breathe exactly alike. Different head gaskets, maybe some carbon build up, variances in jetting and the list goes on. You can take this to the next level and say that no two cylinders breathe exactly alike. 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 turn in either direction is usually all it takes.

Norvil say it doesn't sell Mark II's any more because they say Mark I's are better. The fact that there is no adjustment screw on the pilot circuit may be one of the reasons.

Amal Premiers are sych'd with a manometer on idle screws and at pickup with cables (made a huge difference), air screws are 1 5/8 turns out.

Different castings, different fuels, different cuttaways, different altitudes, worn bits.
They all make a difference.
I wish I was born AMISH, then it wouldn't matter.
AC.

No need to take it out on these innocent people “AC”

Due to the many, many different viable circumstances this survey is, I hate to say it, is going to be another load of B.S.
Why :?:
To long to explain and how long have you got :?:
For fecks sake , go out and invest in a Gunson Colourtune kit, and set your carbs as per instructions, once you have sych'd the carbs, you might just be amazed.
Then charge your mates a couple of dollars to set their carbs, to pay for the said kit.

I dont think A.C. was bagging Amish lifestylers [though it wouldn`t bother me if he did], they would likely say that witchcraft was afoot if a wizard tuner started miracle-curing recalcitrant Commandos anyhow -"If God meant Nortons to be easy..."L.O.L.
He could always move to Nimbin too..

Most Amish are adaptable to modern devices, but they are not allowed to have any device or machine different or special than anyone else is all. All the lawnmowers and cars for instance. All parts interchangable, hehe so the racing is extra close...

Are you saying that being caught sneaking in a 2S cam would be a hanging offence - or do they run a claiming rule? L.O.L.

Its was on a Commando 1000 mile ride with Wesley that we accidentally discovered that same everying principle in the Amish-type church-family-cult groups, when putting chain back on again and taking a break under shade, we were decended on my half dozen of same pu truck and mowers, unloaded and did a team work like job of mowing then packed up and headed to next tasks. It was a bit circus like and we were totally ignored. Since then I learned rule is no one should stand out by material things. These church-families don't believe in capital punishment so likely would have beard cut and not associated with for a while. Anywho sure don't apply to Commando scope of being and ugh tuning.

Hobot, any chance you can give us a 'Hobotish'/US English translator sometime. I can manage most US English/UK English translations from past experience.

I read your posts, and the one above is one of the clearest, in fact it is fairly easy to understand for this English chap....even if the motivation of religious groups never will be....but I always lose something....sometimes it is through the apparently indiscriminant use of expressions like 'ugh', as in this case, but sometimes I miss a lot more of the meaning....

Now it is not that I don't find some of your posts both informative and entertaining, its just that I don't understand all of any of them!

Mind you, I work with Italians and review some of the technical documents they have written in 'Italinglish', and I have the same problem with that!

I find in this case, knowing a little of the Italian language helps me greatly to understand their version of English, and I have the same experience working with French colleagues, and having had to review individual documents with contributions in English from contributors whose natural languages included, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Swedish, I can tell who wrote which section just from their literal translations.

For interest, and without meaning to be too intrusive, what language did your parents speak when you were small?, what language did you use at school?, and do the locals where you live have the same problem I do?

:|

I`m guessing "ugh"= neolithic [ as in Norton factory production engineering], or possibly as in "ughknown" = angst-ridden unknown?

To paraphrase Lord Humungous, "I am a reasonable man, give me your gasoline & a selection of jets to enable a stoichometric burn - & you can leave"
