Not original on this side of the pond. I'm not sure when they stopped using them in the UK. I might consider mounting one on a fastback if I had one though. (humm, I need another bike...)
 
In the UK, front number plates were still compulsory and the laterally mounted type above the headlamp were less common at that stage.

This is from the first-ever edition of the iconic 'Bike' magazine - a back to back test of a 1971 Fastback against a Mk11 Rocket-Three.

Yeah, look at that short skirt and long hair. Wouldn't be surprised if those guys had bell bottoms on too. Too many kids though.
