Ever wonder why the P47 had such a large fuselage?

Read about it here.

If a pilot wanted to take a picture of himself with his aircraft and send it home to his girlfriend, he would do it with a P51.

If a pilot wanted to engage the enemy and get home, he would do it with a P47.

That supercharger system is the prime reason why P47s were good high altitude performers.

The P47 could out dive anything except a Stuka, but if a P47 pilot out of desperation, opted to dive to safety, he would sacrifice altitude where he held an advantage, and have to cope with a fight at lower altitude where the enemy held an advantage.

He could zoom climb with the later Hamstandard prop.
Like the Corsair it ended up its career as a ground attack bomber.
Add in the Typhoon/Tempest another ship designed as a fighter and
did its work as a bomber.

I look at all of the plumbing and can't help but think "turbo lag". I DO realize the throttle is not manipulated as in a car so lag is not as a big as issue but still. I would like to see the carb no doubt it is HUGE!
