Out of gas

We did a tour with a group that
included an 850 Commando with Roadster tank. The bike was carrying luggage and was two up, as with most of the group.

They had to stop at 80 miles or risk running out of fuel.
Often there isnt fuel available at exactly 80 miles. There might be a station at 55 miles and another at 125.
In that case we all had to stop and wait while they tanked up at 55 miles. This went on all day of course.
It was a long day but we sure didn't get very far!
Roadster tanks are ok for a Town bike. They don't work well for 400 mile per day touring.

For me a Commando is best on twisty mountain roads. At 50-60 mph it is not “chuffing along”. Probably why I prefer a 750 over 850.

I can drain mine in ONE hour.
Done it multiple times.
If you chuffing along 50-60mph, 120 miles, no problem.
80-85mph, then 80 miles to empty.

Absolutely! No argument with me. Like I stated before in another thread as well, it depends on how hard you ride, gearing, type of carburetor setup, etc. etc. Also type of fuel. Premium vs E10.
If you hit your reserve and don't know where your next fuel station is then its best to be chuffing;) along as you say. Better than pushing your bike.
Cheers,
Tom
