Its been a long time since my last post, mainly been cleaning up my hardware so get it coated. Anyways, has anyone rebuilt the original rear shocks from their Commando? Is it possible?

Mine are looking pretty sorry and need to be replaced or rebuilt by the time the bike is finished. I'd like to take em apart and have a look and then fix them up, maybe re chrome the springs? Repaint the bodies black?

Does anyone have any knowledge on this?

Thanks,
Matt

A long time ago...I believe on the BI Digest, I read a write up of someone who cut open their original shocks and rebuilt them. All that I can really remember is that "yes" it is possible, but it's more than a shadetree mechanic would probably want to deal with.

I always have a spare set of used shocks here, with the idea that I'll cut them open some time and give it a go...then when the time comes, I look at them and say, "not worth the effort".

I don't mean to be discouraging, but for me, my time & effort is better spent elsewhere.

You can easily pull the springs and repaint the bodies, usually some chrome polish is all that is needed to clean up the springs...unless they're totally rusted. By the time you rechrome springs, you're probably half way to buying a new set.
