Could somebody please show me some images of a pair of original black cap silencers please, somebody has a pair for sale, awaiting images but I'd like to see an original pair so I can compare to make sure they are not pattern parts. Are there any identifying features ? I should look for.

Regards

Mark

Image here.

Note that Triumph T160 and Norton's black caps were not the same.

Having looked around for a really good pair of original black cap silencers for my 1976 Commando and having no luck I've decided to purchase a new pair from AN but would like to have the writing on them as per original, but how was this applied ? I've seen some with writing on the end of the can by the black cap and I've seen some with writing on the cap itself which would have been original to a 1976 Commando ?

Having had a ’75 with original black caps (albeit rotted out), I recall that the inscription you mention was inscribed (etched?)
into the end of the black caps. Perhaps before applying the black. My guess is that it is unlikely to find such today. I bought
a pair of A/N “black cap” mufflers which were quite nice except that they had no inscription and the black caps were poorly painted
black and the paint readily came off. Also, the black cap was not installed exactly as the original. This was 15 years ago. I pointed
this out to them. Maybe it’s made more accurately now?

Mark,

Here's a couple of pictures of the labeling on my original Mark IIA muffler. It's hard to get a good picture with all of that chrome. The labeling is on the side so that it can be used on either side of the bike. The gold lettering doesn't appear to be etched but somehow printed on the chrome finish.

If there's any more information that you need, let me know.

they are marked a couple different ways...... the photos of the black chrome ones are on a JPN, but the bright chrome ones would look the same, the black bean can ends are deeper on the originals. You should use them with cross over pipes to get the best benefit

I'd be curious about what is inside them ( are the baffles the same?) and what is the OD of the new repros made by Andover (is that the same as OEM?)

extremely unlikely any aftermarket bean cans are internally the same as the originals. look up Annular Discharge mufflers.

On the AN website regarding black cap silencers it states THIS SILENCER DOES NOT HAVE THE SAME INTERNAL SOUND DEADNING SYSTEM AS THE 1970'S ORIGINALS SO WILL THEREFORE BE NOISER so they are not the same 😡

Were the originals fiberglass-packed? Not easy to determine what's inside with the black cap on.
no fiberglass used on the originals.

FYI there are two originals listed on craigslist each in different parts of the country

UK or USA ?

Found and purchased a beautiful pair of original black cap silencers and down pipes in brand new condition, came from a bike that had been in a museum since new I'm over the moon. Thank you everyone who pointed out what to look for and finding and providing the images for me, many thanks.
