On the off chance, does anybody have an early 961 gear lever they don't want / need? (the one which points backwards).

I did post this in the “Wanted” section as well.

Cheers,,

You have a pic of the one you need?

Hi Voodooo, it's this one..

Original gear lever.

I gave up waiting for Norton, so made my own. If anyone is interested the spline is the same as a Harley sportster. It's pretty course with 23 teeth, so moving one spline is over 15º difference (too much). Major diameter of the shaft is 12.65mm and minor 11.9mm. It's a bit rudimentary, but works and is more comfortable in operation as I allowed the rubber to spin.

It's great you found a solution . I tried to move my XR1200 shift lever over to the 961 but it would not slide on. I was hoping to convey this news to the forum , but I failed to get mine to fit . It seems like a good solution.

Thank you Tony, that was very nice of you.

I used 'halfords truck bed liner spray paint' but I'm not sure they sell it any more. Halfords, just in case you don't know, is a chain or motorists centers here. They used to sell spare parts, but they are very limited these days. Specialisms seem to be paint, batteries oil, wiper blades, tools (kept in glass security cabinets) and car based farkles which todays yoof seem to like. If you buy a light bulb or wiper blade, they will cheerily ask you if you want to have one of their 'trained technicians' fit it for you. For a fee. You'll often see these guys struggling to gain access to bulbs on cars in the carpark, while owners look cluelessly on. In my view this shows a terminal erosion of the very fabric of society, when a grown man has no inkling of what is happening under his bonnet (hood) or how to change a light bulb on his car. We are doomed as a race!

Anyways, I digress. I can't believe this is a 'special Halfords paint brew' so I think anyone who, sells truck bed textured paint has pretty much the same thing!

Hope that helps!

Mind you, some of these new vehicles and vans aren't overly 'DIY' friendly. Some need the battery removing to access the lights et al, or require the fingers of an emaciated concert pianist.

Yep, agree. I had to put one out of their misery when trying to change a disco bulb. Front grill off, headlamps out just to change a side light bulb! It’s crazy that you have to refer to a manual to change bulbs these days.
