Hi Lads,

Well I picked up my Norton yesterday from the UK. I flew over to the UK to have a look & do the deal about 8 weeks ago & only had the time recently to pick her/him up (I've not figured out if it's a him or a her yet :D )

Anyway, I've been pottering around with the bike checking this & that etc. & I came across an orange thing!! Not sure what it is, I hope this works but here is a pic:
(It's just behind the bottom of the rear fender, it's not the oil filter?)

Orange thing!!!

I'm also unsure what EI it has, another pic:

Orange thing!!!

Here are a few general pics:

Orange thing!!!

Orange thing!!!

Orange thing!!!

Orange thing!!!

The bike was rebuilt in 1999/2000 & had only 1500miles on it & the last owner got a 920 conversion done, the Norvil one. It now has nearly 2000miles on it.

I'm pretty handy with the spanners but I'd like to get somebody else to give the bike a good service, just too busy at the moment.

I know some lads from Ireland are on this forum, is there anybody worth bringing the bike to in Dublin? I was thinking about Leo Reilly?

From a new Norton owner with a BIG grin!!

Could the "orange thing" be a catchment for the oil tank breather? Is there an oil line running into it? That pickup plate looks like a Boyer. If so, those wires should connect to a Boyer "black box" up under the tank somewhere. Nice bike!! Congrats on your purchase. You are going to have a lot of fun with that!

Hi Jason,

It might be a horn but the battery was completely flat, it would start with a charger across the battery.

I've just pulled the battery and it's almost dry!!. I'll eventually get a new battery, thinking about getting an odyssey batt.

For the moment I've just put some distilled water into the batt. & I'll see if I can get the battery to hold a charge!! It was put in the bike in 2001!!!

Thanks

Hi there Click; very nice Norton!

My guess is that it's a horn.

I agree with Jason - horn is located there - a real PITA to replace, too.

Hi tpeever!,

Can't see any oil lines going to the 'orange thing' the mystery continues :D

Doesn't that piss you off, buy a new bike, sold as an out standing example of it's model, and you have to buy a new battery before you can ride it.{the boyer won't work properly with a dead battery} neat bike though.

What a really silly/stupid place to put a horn!!

The story goes that they started off with the horn, and assembled the bike around it!!

Beautiful bike. Looks like it's already had a few of the more important mods too. Did you get any history with the bike - service/upgrade records?

(Does look like a Boyer to me. And what front brake is that??)

Unless I'm very much mistaken, it's one of these: http://www.4-motorcycles.co.uk/acatalog/HOR12VF.jpg

I think I can see the black horn trumpet in your photo.

Anyway, the bike looks good.

Hi L.A.B.,

Give that man a prize :D

I think your spot on, I can see the trumpet as well.

What a really silly/stupid place to put a horn!!

Many Thanks

Click, you will quickly learn it doesn't pay to bet against Les in matters Nortonesque!

Welcome to the forum. I have a few different marques and keep up regularly with probably a dozen boards. IMHO, this is far and away the best. The level of expertise here is very high. And the willingness to share it and help others, likewise.

Click — Very nice bike, congratulations! Unless you have a specialist engineering problem or the bike isn't running right and you're at your wit's end, I suggest you wait till you are less busy and service it yourself.

I've sent you a private message.

Hi Dave,

I think your right, I'll have to get my hands dirty! It will give me a chance to check everything over etc.

I had a look at the EI box under the tank & it's just a black box no markings/stickers etc. For the moment, as long as it works, I'll leave well alone!

I'm going to get a Wesco YB14L-A2 over from the UK. Can't seem to find any suppliers of Gel Batts in Ireland.

Now, where did I put those whitworth spanners :D
