On my 850 Mk2 I found that one of the big end caps weighs about 1/4 ounce more that the other.

Is this something that can be corrected by carefully grinding away on the caps ridges?

I am trying to decide whether to send the crank to be balanced. If I do would the machine shop take care of this as part of their balancing?

Reviewing old threads about balancing there was some question about the correct balance factor. Some Norton manuals say 52% wet. Mine says 52% dry and I plan on using that number unless someone changes my mind.

Do not grind on the ridges. Remove material outboard of the bolt holes.

Have it balanced by a reliable machine shop. You'll be happy you did. My MKIII was much smoother after mine was balanced.

Some balance shops will balance the rods.
Some will get a bob weight from an average.
Some will grind material from the ridges and dramatically weaken the rod.
