Just drained the oil from the bike. Put a flashlight down the oil tank to see about 1/4 of sludge that doesn't make it out of the drain holes!
I pulled the tank off the bike. Put a heavy degreaser in it and let it sit then pressure washed it out. Whatever, it worked.

I have two questions before refilling the bike:
Is this same sludge not making it out of the bottom of the case when I take the sump plug out? There is another small bolt just down from the sump plug that seems to sit a bit lower (it also faces DOWN like the sump plug) - Don't want to take this out without knowing if it does something I shouldn't be messing with.

The other question is about the two mounting brackets for the oil take. When I look at the parts catalog it shows a piece that has thread then rubber then thread and holds the tank to the frame. MINE seems like the rubber has been cut and where it meets the frame is a little plastic plug it rubs against - was this some type of aftermarket deal???? I thought maybe the rubber split but the plug seems to be made for this.

Picture?

well i think the smaller bolt is the sump plug - i was just draining through the large plug that has the mesh filter in it. I gather there are 2 drains on the bottom. Correct?

i don't have a photo of the mounting brackets - not sure why someone would only have the take held on by the bottom bolt and the hoses

rgla,
Sounds as if the oil tank mount has split in half..very common problem and I believe there is a thread somewhere to improve on the original fixings. I have used a bigger mounting bolt with a thicker rubber insert to try and keep the vibrations away from the tank. You are right ...the smaller, lower plug would be the drain plug and the larger one is the filter holder. Always good practice to clean the filter after draining the oil.

Your mounting bolt is broken, item #2 below/ part #060636. My tank has two of these bolts and they both failed. I beleive the "plastic plug" you refer to may just be one of these sheered rubber mounts. I recently read here about an alternative rubber mounting bolt that was a bit beefier and I believe it was a Harley mount. As previously suggested if you do a search on oil tanks you will find some of these tanks are prone to fail, you will also find the recommended repairs.
