Oil Tank Dipstick

My 74 850 has the short dipstick in the oil tank. When I change the oil, with 3 quarts it reads low. The early square tanks that I have checked have a longer dipstick and all the later model tanks I have checked have the short dipstick. Is this correct? With 3 quarts of oil in the system, I'm probably safe, but it makes me crazy to run it with it reading low on the dipstick. Whatcha think.

Low to middle is alright.
If you fill it to the top mark then do some high speed riding, it will spray out. Been there done that.

Early dip sticks are too short to reach proper filled oil level. Get used to filling to about 1/2" below stick or let the excess just blow out for you or add extension to stick, rigid or flexable.

Suspect you will learn same thing about manual listed level in primary case too.
