I had an oil tank out of the frame and decided to check on capacity levels.
I blocked the connections off and used water to fill to the 1 and 2 US quart levels.
Then dipped a wooden stick to find the level.

Note that this is only tank capacity, of course there will be some oil in the crankcases and lines.
Also see that only 1 quart will cover the feed line filter screen big 'bolt'.

I did this because I recall that there are several lengths of dip stick caps and level markings.

Edit: My dipstick shows on the 'L' mark right at 2 quarts.

That's about right. The service manual says 6 US pints and between the oil lines, sump and spin on oil filter maybe another pint for a total of around 2.7 US quarts which is my understanding since my first Commando in 1973.

I found this photo interesting. With an oil filter and accounting for all the oil in the lines, I would think the "L" mark on the dipstick (2 quart mark on the above tank) to be plenty of oil for these machines. That would be at least 2.5 quarts of oil. Thoughts?
