No need to seal ..... The pressure side of the pump is directed to the conical seal. The suction side of the pump, the base, draws from the sump.... If there is a leak at the base, some oil from the timing chest is brought in and mixed with sump oil .... no big deal.

Never thought of it that way
So really none of them need a gasket
I think I'd still fit one :D

Yes, I thought of fitting one at one time, but decided to stay with the stock configuration.
Note that, should you fit a gasket, it may become necessary to relieve the conical seal, as the thickness of the gasket will put a greater compression on the conical seal. Use a thin paper gasket if you use one.

I would agree that none of the Commando engines should need a seal, but I would stay with stock configuration..... i.e. use a gasket if one was factory fitted. I agree with your post #2, no gasket goop. Or at least minimal, as the goop can block the oil ports in the base.
