Whilst out on my commando yesterday the oil light came on
I immediately pulled over
Checked the oil tank/oil return and no problems
Also couldn't see if the wire was shorted out somewhere
As there was no knocking or rattling I decided to head back and investigate
It turned out to be just the oil pressure switch had failed
I fitted an oil pressure gauge and the pressure was fine
It was a bit perplexing though when the light came on!!!!

Mine would catch the sunlight at times and look like it was on so if fitted a gauge no more worries

At the moment the guage is fitted to the crankcase rocker feed
But I am now considering fitting one alongside the clocks

Easy to see

At least is was a false scare - a real one could be worse. I install these on all my builds and explain them well to the buyers. Since oil was returning, and the tank level was not dropping, it's pretty clear that you were OK but as you said, it coming on is perplexing, and I would add scary and something to be immediately checked! IMHO:
  • If something is wrong on the feed side, oil won't return normally because the sump is not getting enough oil to return - REAL BAD.
  • If something is wrong on the return side, then oil won't return properly and the sump will be filling (tank getting lowering) If you have a reed valve and it's on at or near the bottom of the engine the oil won't return right but the valve might return it so the tank might not get lower - Not as bad.

I know the engine is in good fettle and I know the way it feels if you know what I mean
Maybe if I'd just bought the bike I'd shut it down and trailer it home
