I know this has been discussed ad Infinium but here's a slightly different question. Although original herringbone would be nice, that ship has sailed. I just want to replace some 50 year old hoses. Many sell them, but so far, none are the correct OD as far as I can tell (haven't bought AN ones yet).

They are 3/8" ID and to fit through the protectors, and to easily route, they need to be 5/8" OD. The Gates 27059 are 3/4" OD and the Derale 13016 are 11/16" OD. The Derale ones almost fit, but not quite.

If someone knows of a source, with name and part, I would love to hear it. Of course I want approved for hot oil - not gas lines. Both of the ones I mentioned above are thicker because they are very high pressure - that's not needed - the pressures are not very high.

First place I checked - they have Gates in stock - 3/4" OD and braided steel.
Well, Dang! The hose that I got from them fits my '73 850 very well but I did put this bike together in 2010 so I guess that supplies change. Good luck.

A friend got some nice oil line 2 years ago for a Shovelhead project from Russell Performance.

BTW, I've spoken with Gates and Derale tech support. They have no 3/8" ID products that will work and as far as they know, no one does. I've written to AN to get the OD of the hose they sell - more when I know. British Only is selling herringbone on eBay right but they measured the OD at slightly more than 11/16". Steadfast has German made herringbone at almost $20/foot - don't know the OD yet.

I just did all of mine a few months back and had no issues with sizing. Not HB of course, but did get satisfactory rating on heat and pressure for oil service. The protectors slid over it easily enough too so nothing was left out for me to complain of.
I think I've some left over and shall check if enough info left to ID make.

It’s only a 1/16 difference. Not that hard.
Even more interesting! I thought you might be restricting your oil flow, but I just carefully measured the metal pipes - while they are 3/8" OD, they are slightly less than 5/16" ID so that's not an issue. I couldn't get the 5/16" transmission oil cooler hose I have on, but it's very cold right now - probably will work warmed up.

Hair dryer or carefully applied heat gun. They came off after many years without much complaint with a heat gun. They’ll go on just as easy.

You definitely don’t want to do it cold.

I have used hose for VW beetles isn’t herrring bone but woven cloth covered. Looks very similar and was $15 for 5 ft. If you google VW beetle oil hose you should find a supplier near you. You can ask o/d size . I got 1/2 I/D for 1968 but I know you can get 3/8 also

I was planning on using Nylon braided -6AN

You can get the protector to fit on larger pipes by twisting it so it opens out, you need 3 or 4 hands to be also able to feed the pipe through but once in place release the protector and it will grip the pipe and not move.

I used the Gates fuel line for another bike project. The brass line feeding the the pump is 3/8" diameter, and the Gates I.D. is 7/16" which is a bit too large. The O.D. of the Gates hose is too small for the original ferrules. The fix was to solder a ring of #12 copper wire over the brass oil tube. This tightly sealed the line and expanded the O.D. providing a tight fit for the ferrule. ~998cc

I've looked at my leftovers and found : 1/4" (6.4mm) 375psi max, not enough 3/8" left with markings. Both are Dayco with smooth coating over single nylon braid. I recollect discussion with Phil at time of purchase on temp rating since not printed, but was more than sufficient for the service. The smaller ID shall most always carry more rated pressure than larger unless more braid layers are added.
