I would like to installing an oil filter on my 1968 Norton Mercury, or 650 SS if you go by the stamping on the crankcase. Something similar to the oil filter on the later Commandos. Is there a standard retro available, or do folks assemble this out of aftermarket parts, shop built brackets, etc? I would appreciate suggestions on where to locate the oil filter on the bike, and where to cut into the oil lines.

When I did the final rebuild on my 650SS I used a Commando spin on oil filter. As far as I can remember , it was installed via a bracket to the engine plates, behind the gearbox. Again as far as I remember I used mainly Commando parts, but it was in 1979, that's a long time ago!
Best of luck.
cheers

Here is a one off that I designed for my F-bed. PM me if you want a dimensioned drawing.

Thanks Slick. Where did you get the cast filter body??

It was used. Came from a Brit bike supplier...dont remember which one. You can find them on Ebay.

BTW....you asked where to cut into the oil lines....I cut the return line about 3 inches from the manifold block, used a 5/16 x 5/16 tube union, then fabricated a 5/16 aluminum tube to run over top of the gear box, to the filter, and connected to the filter with a short piece of fuel tube and worm clamps. the return line is also fab'd from 5/16 al tube and runs back to the oil tank with fuel tube connector. You will need a 5/16 tube bender to do the fab work...don't even think about it without one. I would loan you mine, but you can buy your own for little more than 2 way post. PM if you need a source for one, and for aluminum tube. Actually, I recently posted Useful Links in the Motorcycle Related Discussion category which includes links for sourcing these items.

Dyno Dave sells this for mounting the Commando filter on the Feather bed frame. It allows mounting of the standard commando oil filter housing available from any Norton parts supplier

Thanks for the info. It looks like there is no simple installation. Both require a custom fabricated bracket and a fiddly assembly process. Have to cogitate on this over a seasonal beer.

I like it...it can't swing or rotate out of position.
also the welded on nuts don't have to be held with a wrench while assembling the engine plates.
Sold many dozen, but true there is not much of a market for them.

I'd like to see less steel added to the bike, just to mount a filter.

I have a similar filter on my short chaincase Pre-unit Triton. I drilled the timing side engine plate, behind the gearbox.
