Hi Lads,

Started phase 1 of my starter upgrade, install thicker cables.

Got the cables from Norvil. Spent nearly a full day figuring out how to route them & came to the conclusion they are too short!!

The red earth cable is just long enough to reach the battery, but it's very tight & will need replacing.

The black cable from the starter to the solenoid is not long enough, the original is 23 3/4" the one sent from Norvil is 22"

Got an email from Les saying they where OE length, which they are not!

Serves me right for being lazy, I was going to make up my own  anybody know a good supplier of cable/connectors in the UK?

All the best

Kevin

If I remember correctly, I used the VWP 170A 196/0.40 cable but the 322/0.30 is probably better.

However, I know others have recommended using welding cable.

Appreciate the info. & help, it's like having my own technical support helpline :D

Now to do some ordering!

Stronger starter cables available under part # 06-7269 from Andover Norton. These are long enough.

Hi ZFD,

Good find, I didn't check with Andover thinking, wrongly, that they would only supply original spec. cables.

Thanks

Kevin

Update:

A lad in Ireland made up a set of cables for me + I got my upgraded starter in the post.

Just finished the install and I now have a fully working electric start as opposed to an electric assist

It's early days, but so far everything is working OK.

If I get some time I'll stick up a video on youtube of the bike starting.

Build your own and route them to your liking. Any decent marine supply shop will carry bulk 4 gauge and 6 gauge insulated flexible copper cable and the connectors that are soldered to the end (takes a hefty iron). Add heat shrink to the ends and your custom product will fit perfectly, cost less, and look as good as anything available from a motorcycle supply shop. More fun, too.

Hi Lads,

Brought the Norton on a shakedown run today to check all the changes I made where OK, did about 30miles.

Shot some video on my phone of the bike starting using the new starter:
