Back in the 70's I got to take a few laps of practice at Ascot park on Ron Woods Norton, the very same one Alex Jorgenson rode.

I would like to hear more about that story. I spent some time in the pits at Ascot with the Norton ridden by David Aldana.

Better look again - the white bike has a single 36 mm Mikuni on it.

The white bike ran times ~ 1 sec slower than the mid-pack GNC Pro bikes (oval port XRs, and Kawasaki vertical twins with ~ 100 HP) ran on Sunday.

Pretty good for one carb , must be the tourque . Have to tell him to put two on , then he will clean them all up . :D :P

Did you get a sound tape of the races ? ? Better video em , next time , PLEASE . :D

Oh man I just love those high level pipes on the white one, they've got to sound wicked..

How do Kawasaki vertical twins achieve 100 BHP and get drive with a 180 degree crank ?

That's Kelly George's Bike on his practice track....

Yes and Mike Villani is the rider. Kelly George has his own practice track? Wow. Now how about some foxy cheerleaders please.

Man-o-Live Mike did you ever steer me right on Weuson. Made peace with The Travelers club so got a T-shirt to show instead of scars. Ms Peel was gifted a major new feature i didn't even know existed. Got sprayed in the face with rock chips flavored with oil dust and alcohol fumes. Watched a mono e momo grudge match between the track favorite an XR Harley and the single carb Commando - switching leads twice at each bend of oval to see the Norton lose by a bike length close finish. On the final main feature the crowd was awed by pilot Spencer flat putting down more single carb power than the rest of the pack to gain seconds by time flag dropped to a standing stadium full of cheering. Then followed my nose and the flow of folks into the infield pit area to have builder George and Spencer detailed a hand full of unique and against the grain features. Dream event didn't let up even then as I quickly realized my ball cap was a gonner before I got 50 yds away thinking Kelly got more time-money than sense jerking my arm with his sweet shit eating grin
" Be Sure To Get It ON Cam and Pipes... not once but Twice
"Get It it on The Cam and Pipes ~>>>
Open pipes 282 lbs 17Tx55sprocket no first gear ...
Shot out into surreality across backfield dried rough mud lake shadowed by diffuse stadium lights with peninsulas of turf menacing me naked as Jay Bird...
Hot Damn~! those Maxis tires are amazing - each pad is as soft as a breast and Kelly made more compliant-edgy by lots of extra grooves.... so too much traction to test power steering as LOUDLY pulls Hi Ho Silvers trying to get it on Cam and Pipes!!! I told Kelly it'd be half again faster with duals instead of just a 38 mm but he just winked back knowingly, Maybe it was our WZ here that put a word in for me. Thank you Thank you very Much.

Also got a head full of rider and builder talk. Two other 'Commandos' made final heat, one a short stroke Maney JMS 750 and another I didn't meet but were both dusted by Kelly's beast but did go neck and neck with the XR a ways behind. Listened to the seasoned slower guys all complain about this tract's lack of traction, not sticking like on rails - while the fastest ones complained its got too much traction to jump tracks easy.

OH yeah I saw Spencer catch almost axle high air twice in mid bend, no other pilot could get theirs hooked up that well or got laid out not getting up w/o aid. I told him and he said he didn't even know it which made perfect sense once hooking up like a unicycle.

Just found out from Mike that Jordan Baber is the actual rider in the photo above - now edited.

Spoke to Kelly tonight and he wanted to Thank you
for all the great parts Jim Schmidt! And he's also glad to have
met you Hobot. He had so much fun himself instead
of not planning on keeping up with the race scene he'll
be building at least one more racer this winter.

I've ridden maybe a dozen bikes in my life time - so counting Kelley's makes 3 of em I didn't crash on almost immediately. The other two were a Honda a fella wanted me to test with almost frozen stem bearings and the other an 88 cid cafe Harley that was too tractor like and lean limited to go beyond a few miles in Mt twistiest before I got too scared to add to crash list. Biggest cycle I didn't crash on was big red Indian Chief I'd do jumps and grass field slides on. Which reminds me bad ass as the white Norton was both Kelly and Spencer said Kelly's Indian would flat eat it up and Spencer was disappointed Kelly didn't bring it so he had to ride the Norton instead.

Oh yeah being spoiled by isolastics Kelly's frame distinctly transmitted engine vibe sense *** until snapped throttle and LOUD exhaust blast felt like the bone conduction sounds wave of battle of bands mega watt sound systems fidelity though whole body not mere pilot contact points. All the cycles were louder than road racers some what d/t to no mufflers but also road racers have some delay in reaching full rpm getting it on - when these guys nailed it on dirt the full rpms blasts hits right away.

There was a lot of tail end swishing then throttle cuts to save which swished tails opposite way so throttle ups to save - in cycles that killed speed for most these riders. Just like me going too slow on THE Gravel, got to get on good hard planing speed to smooth things out. More than my surprise blasts across graveled mud flat seeing Spencer catch axle high air in mid oval turn was bigger more pleasing shocker as that's what happens in Phase Four energy handing on Peel so now I know those Maxis tires can hook that kind of load. The squirrels left a constant arc of front tire path that was crossed on both sides by rear tire track. The XRHarley dude after a heat I think he lost got pissed off and ran wide on purpose close to the hay bails and left a pair of parallel RR like tracks 18" apart the whole way around. Heard him claim between laughs he thinks he also pushed one fella to glance off hay bales doing this. Only ones taking it like I do Peel were the Speedway bikes that toss around almost full sideways still in the straight, way before it takes affect then just hang on to throttle so by time it does take affect and hooks again some ya shot across inside path not slid way out. Everyone would snap some straight steering in to save going too wide ... Speedway tires are bicycle narrow but still only using one 1/3 of the width. I know wider patch matters on loose stuff so I bought squaty wide rear rim to get closer to the quads racers wide patch.

Kelly has his groomed practice track but there's a tiny kids go cart oval dirt/gravel track near me, maybe 300 yrd all around that's left open and unguarded ... my mower about fixed to cut a figure 8 pasture track in my front yard.

Thought you might like to see the practice track. Everyone should have one of these in their back yard eh? It is my understanding that it is modeled after Ascot, but is 40-50 ft shorter in the straightaways, with very similar corner radius.

Black dirt pit in the foreground, large dark colored track in the background, in the middle right of the picture (partially hidden by the tree clump) you can see one end of the small lighter colored track for small displacement bikes.
Nortons on the Dirt

And of course you wouldn't want only a single purpose track, so they've got a TT jump in the middle of it to make it a multipurpose facility.

If I had one of those tracks in my backyard I'd be sliding on it right now instead of surfing the web.

Dough n Linda Townsley lmcguire@ccgmail.net was a bit late sending this but with Austin closer than northern tracks and friends and relations there could be a place for Peel show downs. Strangely i kept watching below race video for them to take loose turns like Peel and wondering why they miss all the short cuts in turns and stayed all in a line, then surprised by announcer saying they need rear brake to start slides and are scared to jump the rubbery rut right out of there... at least they go fast enough to know brakes are only for steering in emergency but still cost acceleration when every little instant puts it a bike length slower. Hot diggity dog!!

The line-up includes two women, Nichole Mees and Shayna Texter. Shayna's brother, Cory, is also one of the selected riders. And Nichole's husband, Jared, will be joining her on the starting line also. This never happened at Ascot.

I saw Dave Atherton's bike and spoke to him a couple of years ago at a regional race at DuQuoin. It was out of commission then, too, and he had to ride his "spare" XR-750.
